Mart supporters rally in vain (Aug 13 2003 09:27 GMT) - PENNSAUKEN - The conflict over razing the gritty, cinderblock Pennsauken Mart shopping center in favor of a new civic center seems like a political campaign issue, with door-to-door canvassing, a march on Trenton and a debate last night before a vocal crowd of about 500. |

Wireless Lan update (Aug 13 2003 09:27 GMT) - After ringing Netgear after having no response on the email, and spending 9 minutes on hold I spoke to a techie who said that the problem was likely to do with having a duff power supply. If i installed the usb manager software and got some specific error messages - "Device not recognised" or "DSU not recognised" (or something like that) then the problem was definately a faulty psu. Seeing as though that was the error message I got when I installed the usb software I persuaded him to send me a replacement PSU and I don't need to send anything back so its a free replacement. The PSU comes from the netherlands so I have to wait a couple of days for it :-( Still I'll be glad to be wireless again! |

UNFAIR AND UNBALANCED (Aug 13 2003 09:27 GMT) - Washington Post: "Fox News Channel has sued liberal humorist Al Franken and the Penguin Group to stop them from using the phrase 'fair and balanced' in the title of his upcoming book." There is nothing fair and balanced in Fox News. |

Research Suggests New Way To Can Spam (Aug 13 2003 09:27 GMT) - In the brave new world of lower access fees in exchange for spam, satisfied consumers would pay less for Internet service, say researchers at the University of Missouri in Columbia. ISPs would cover their discount costs with ad dollars from spammers, and advertisers would improve their marketing efficiency. |

Information pollution (Aug 13 2003 09:27 GMT) - Write less is the key message from the August 11 Alertbox. Jakob missed another key recommendation, however: throw away the crap that you have already written. Most web sites could get an immediate boost in usability if they just cleaned up the pollution they have already created. |

Nutch: Open source search engine (Aug 13 2003 09:27 GMT) - Nutch is a nascent effort to implement an open-source web search engine. Nutch provides a transparent alternative to commercial web search engines. Only open source search results can be fully trusted to be without bias. (Or at least their bias is public.) All existing major search engines have proprietary ranking formulas, and will not explain why a given page ranks as it does. |

As it is explained in its website, Flui is a lightweight GUI framework for Flash based applications. Diamonds are... Diamonds are... (Aug 13 2003 09:24 GMT) - Forever? How about "on sale now for $5 a caret!" I really like Wired's article The New Diamond Age. Joshua Davis did a nice job of reporting on the cutting edge of technology in the world of artificial diamonds while telling a good story at the same time.... |

And the verdict is... (Aug 13 2003 09:24 GMT) - I'm quite pleased; the tension I was feeling over the behaviorist/cognitivist point of view was, primarily, my wondering what would come of conversation with my supervisor. But we were in complete agreement on what I thought was the right way to proceed; as such, I'm going to concentrate my efforts on exploring the role of timing in novice programmer compilation behavior from a behavioral perspective. As for teaching, I will probably end up teaching what I know, but I did make a request to be kept in mind if anything... |
