New internet pest striking home (Aug 13 2003 13:59 GMT) - Anti-virus companies have been sounding alarms about a new internet pest called, variously, MsBlast, MBlast, Blaster, Poza and Lovesan -- and if your Windows browser keeps rebooting, you've got it. |

Editor's INSIGHT 12 August 2003 (Aug 13 2003 13:59 GMT) - There are hopeful signs the 34th Pacific Islands Forum under way in Auckland will make more progress than is usual with this under-achieving organisation. The agenda of such get-togethers always seems to be captured by a major outside event, which concentrates minds on matters elsewhere. The task that should be at hand is overlooked or put off to another day. |

NADER (Aug 13 2003 13:57 GMT) - SAN FRANCISCO - Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader (news - web sites) was hit with a pie as he endorsed party member Peter Camejo for California governor. The show of political support at the Green Party's San Francisco headquarters took an unscripted turn Tuesday when a prankster burst into the room and slammed a cream pie into Nader's face. The culprit fled through a side door. Camejo later suggested the pie assault was the work of Democrats who may feel threatened by the Green Party's growing popularity. Some Democrats blame Nader for helping put President Bush (news - web sites) in the White House by siphoning off votes from Vice President Al Gore (news - web sites) in the 2000 election. |

Retro Candy (Aug 13 2003 13:57 GMT) - Chick-O-Sticks, Big Hunks and bubble-gum cigarettes. Ribbon candy, Pixy Stix and Goo Goo Clusters. Nostalgia candy is hot. Boomers yearning to reconnect with their youth are turning to Internet sites to order throwback treats like Cherry Mash and Sen-Sen. And now, retail stores (including many owned by baby boomers) are adding old-fashioned candy to their catalog of vendibles. |

The New Diamond Age (Aug 13 2003 13:57 GMT) - Aron Weingarten brings the yellow diamond up to the stainless steel jeweler's loupe he holds against his eye. "This is very rare stone," he says, almost to himself, in thickly accented English. "Yellow diamonds of this color are very hard to find. It is probably worth 10, maybe 15 thousand dollars." "I have two more exactly like it in my pocket," I tell him. |

tolerance (Aug 13 2003 13:55 GMT) - Shock and Awe revisited I am absolutely in awe of the world's astonishing tolerance for the Windows operating system. Sure it's not Microsoft's fault that there exist misguided people who insist on creating havoc. Sure they are more targeted by these "evil doers" than other os vendors -- that's the price they pay for their extremely dominant marketshare. |

The Two Bloggeriffic Stories of the Day (Aug 13 2003 13:54 GMT) - MoDo announces that not only blogs specifically, but the Internet in general, is dead. However, my guess is that as long as there are personalities like Maureen Dowd around to ridicule and pick apart, blogs will continue to exist in their current, snarky form (and they'll probably continue to popularize words like "snarky" as well. At least that's the "meme"). In other news, they've decapitated Ted Williams. I have no idea what to say about this. |

Oh yeah. And while things ... (Aug 13 2003 13:52 GMT) - Oh yeah. And while things were being made ready for the funeral, I was looking at the bookshelves, and they were looking for some book numbered 4.0 with the numbered books, and it eventually turned out to be the dictionary, but I was looking at the sparkly series on the one shelf, in the sorts of hardbacks one gets from the SF Book Club, and I was commenting. It was the Earth's Children series, only it was going by a different name, and there was far more of the sparkly rainbow unicornish stuff going on, but it was the same series and there was a bit of an argument about it. And it was, like, books 26, 27, and some upwards. |
