Identity Theft (Aug 13 2003 15:59 GMT) - I just finished re-reading a long thread on Slashdot about Identity Theft. It is something I've been thinking about for a while. I mean, I have a firewall on my home network and run 128-bit WEP on my wireless, but I don't do anything to protect myself from identity theft. Why not? So I decided to try to learn a little bit about how you can protect yourself. |

The patch was made available via Windows Update, via AutoUpdate, through the company's public Web site, and through its Security email newsletters. |

Google's built-in calculator function (Aug 13 2003 15:59 GMT) - To use Google's built-in calculator function, simply enter the expression you'd like evaluated in the search box and hit the Enter key or click the Google Search button. The calculator can evaluate mathematical expressions involving basic arithmetic (5+2*2 or 2^20), more complicated math (sine(30 degrees) or e^(i pi)+1), units of measure and conversions (100 miles in kilometers or 160 pounds * 4000 feet in Calories), and physical constants (1 a.u./c or G*mass of earth/radius of earth^2). You can also experiment with other numbering systems, including hexadecimal and binary. |

Metisse (Aug 13 2003 15:59 GMT) - I stumbled across this group last night while tracking down who was singing a track in the latest Dead Like Me episode. With good electronic tracks and haunting vocals it's quite enjoyable! ...a mixture of true celtic electronic wizardry and the beauty of all that is African... electronic and soul. |

The Man Who Mistook His Girlfriend for a Robot (Aug 13 2003 15:57 GMT) - The Man Who Mistook His Girlfriend for a Robot When David Hanson set out to build a robotic head, he saw no reason not to make it look just like a human. Then he stumbled into the Uncanny Valley. (For contrast and comparison, a similarly-themed prior post). |

Super Sticky Fun (Aug 13 2003 15:57 GMT) - The launch page for Super Sticky Post It Notes has a creepy staged picture of a mom handing her daughter a post-it laden lunch box. Besides the creepy look on mom's face and the reminder post-it stuck to the outside of the front door, I also like how the writing on each post it is horizontal, regardless of the orientation of the post it. It's like one of those "can you pick out the 12 things wrong with this picture" games. |
