Microsoft abandons Outlook Express [Tim Strafford-Taylor] (Aug 13 2003 19:47 GMT) - with apologies for all the MS stuff today, but this one really caught my eye as most of the "casual" users that I know use Outlook Express, so Microsoft abandons Outlook Express might be of interest to them.... "It might be the world's most widely distributed email client, but Microsoft has confirmed that it has no intention of further developing Outlook Express. ....[it] just sits where it is... "The technology doesn't go away, but no new work is being done. |

Dean's farm policy (Aug 13 2003 19:46 GMT) - One of the areas that I strongly disagree with Dean is farm policy. Dean strongly supports ethanol for example, which in my opinion is a massive welfare-esque boondoggle subsidy. An AP story comes out now with a LOT more detail about Dean's rural plans: |

Lemon Meringue (Aug 13 2003 19:46 GMT) - I believe in the ability to be psychic, but I don't think most psychics are really what they claim to be. Sylvia Brown, for instance. I think she's basically full of crap. Anyone in the world can throw out a bunch of thoughts and be right at least 25% of the time. How old is Sylvia? |

Needed: Protections against fake e-books and the like (Aug 13 2003 19:45 GMT) - In her Slate article on the risks of e-book piracy, Joy Press led with an example of a phony e-book that was "cobbled together" from previous recipes of Jamie Oliver, the "Naked Chief." Also, how about the risks of e-books where facts or opinions would be changed without the knowledge or consent of the author or publisher? Such dangers exist in various forms; the worst scenario would be a 1984ish one with the government itself as the villain. That's one reason why I like the idea of national digital library systems, which, though independent, might be monitored from outside in some way to assure their integrity. |
