SOA over OO? (Aug 14 2003 23:59 GMT) - I came across an article on eWeek about Don Box's talk at the XML Web Services One Conference on object-oriented programming giving way to service-oriented architectures. It reminded me about some things I read a while back on X#, has anyone heard anything about whether or not it actually exists, and if so when MS is hoping to release it? |

The other day the The ... (Aug 14 2003 23:55 GMT) - The other day the The Redhead Wore Crimson said: "Again I am going to bitch about men (and I've never seen a woman do this, although perhaps it happens sometimes) who lean out the windows of their (usually) trucks and whistle or yell things at me on my commute" I am a man, I don't understand the behavior of many men either. I was married to a beautiful woman for 22 years and I worry that I didn't tell her she was beautiful as much as I should have. It makes me wonder, knowing how many men behave, if the men (or women) in their lives ever take the time to stop and tell them how beautiful they are. Sometimes it makes me want to stop and tell them that they are beautiful. |

The semantic web and education (Aug 14 2003 23:55 GMT) - I've been wondering when there would be much thought given to the application of the semantic web to education. Terry Anderson's talk at Merlot2003 "Beyond Learning Objects: Towards the Educational Semantic Web" as reported by Greg Ritter is the first detailed example I've seen of work in this direction. I was intrigued that people seemed to recognize the chicken-or-egg nature of the semantic web: how to bootstrap such a complex endeavor? |

Devo sells out? (Again?) (Aug 14 2003 23:55 GMT) - From AdAge.com: "Whip It," the 1980 song that was the anthem of the band Devo's rage against a society dehumanized by industry and commercialism, is now the theme of a Procter & Gamble Co. TV campaign for the Swiffer line of home-cleaning products. In a new version of the tune, Devo lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh substitutes the lyrics "Swiffer's good" for the "Whip it good" of the original... |

P2P network originates in Palestinian refugee camp (Aug 14 2003 23:55 GMT) - A pair of entrepreneurs in a Palestinian refugee camp have set up a file-sharing network using an app called Earthstation 5 that has been downloaded over 22 million times and has been translated into more than a dozen languages, including Turkish and Chinese. The app has a bunch of legal attack-resistance included in its design and deployment, though it remains to be seen how hard it really is to figure out who's using the app to share what. "We're in Palestine, in a refugee camp," said Ras Kabir, the service's co-founder. "There aren't too many process servers that are going to be coming into the Jenin refugee camp. We'll welcome them if they do. |

Multi-city blackouts? Power grid Clusterfuck? (Aug 14 2003 23:55 GMT) - What's going on? My friend and ex-colleage Jason McCabe Calacanis says there's just been some kind of massive power outage in NYC... our old Silicon Alley Reporter offices just lost power... all phone circuits in NYC seem to be busy, and all New Yorkers on my IM list just went black. Kucinich: Democratic hopeful and suspected terrorist (Aug 14 2003 23:55 GMT) - Dennis Kucinich, the presidential hopeful who's guestblogging at Lessig's blog, has posted a cracking good defense of John Gilmore's practice of wearing a "Suspected Terrorist" pin on airplanes: I have to admit to a feeling of resentment at the extent of the security searches every time I travel by air. The armed guards, the x-ray machines, the metal detectors, the pat downs, the search of luggage and personal effects, the removal of shoes, and for some, I suppose, the explanation of prosthetics, pacemakers, and appurtenances, constitutes a massive invasion of privacy. We have just come to accept this as a natural state of things because, like Gilmore, we're all suspected terrorists. I find myself having to explain to people why I, as a Presidential candidate, am repeatedly shuttled off to that special line of selectees identified by the SSSS stamped on my ticket. |
