(Aug 15 2003 17:59 GMT) - by CA Pol Junkie When the Pentagon announced it wanted to reduce imminent danger and family separation pay, let's just say the critical reviews were disappointing: Army Times: talk is cheap and getting cheaper by the day, judging from the... |

Commons Logging was my fault (Aug 15 2003 17:59 GMT) - I'll come right out and admit it: commons-logging, at least in its initial form, was my fault, though probably not mine alone. Back in 2001 I did a fair bit of work refactoring and debugging commons-httpclient. As part of that effort, I replaced a custom setDebug()/System.out. |

Reader-submitted Photos Now on GoUpstate.com (Aug 15 2003 17:58 GMT) - I should have known that Andy Rhinehart was busy implementing reader-submitted photos over at GoUpstate.com, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal's web site. Check out the "From Your View" column on their front page, a different picture every day. You can view the archives or readers can create an account to upload their own pix. "We began a couple of weeks ago with a note 'Send us your best photos from the summer of 2003', and that's what's online now. |

Finger Pointing (Aug 15 2003 17:57 GMT) - Bush speaks about the economy (from 8/13/03): "During the August vacation, as I recall, there was the march to war. It's hard to have an upbeat view of the world when you're 'marching to war.' War is not exactly a positive thought, particularly when it comes to people willing to take risks, and consumer confidence." |

Finger Pointing (Aug 15 2003 17:57 GMT) - Any bets on how long it will take before Bush blames the recent blackouts as yet another reason why the economy hasn't gotten back on track, as promised?Q: A year from now you are going to be standing for reelection, yourself. Do you think there will be as many jobs as when you took office? And when will we start to see a significant decrease in the unemployment rate? |

I'll stay overnight somewhere in NH and return to Tuesday afternoon for a local host committee dinner in Cambridge. It'll be my first time covering the presidential campaign on location. Jim Moore says he may come along. I think Halley from Halley's Comment is coming too. |

Technology Makes You Stupid? (Aug 15 2003 17:57 GMT) - A silly article written by someone who is showing their age, complaining about things he doesn't understand when it comes to others using technology. It comes off as a "Well, back in my day, we didn't have any of this new-fangled technology stuff, since we had to walk to school uphill both ways in the rain, and etch our homework in clay...." While I personally don't enjoy ringtones (I'm good with keeping the damn phone on vibrate, so as not to bother others), that doesn't mean they're making people stupid. He's upset that ringtone popularity is now more indicative of what's popular than sales of singles, because apparently, what determined pop culture when he was a kid must always determine pop culture or something must be wrong. He also completely misses the point of camera-phones, assuming that because the quality doesn't match regular digital phones, there's absolutely no use for them. |

Macs Not Wanted (Aug 15 2003 17:57 GMT) - I'll agree wholeheartedly with Cringely's conclusion that Macs are persona non grata in the enterprise, but I disagree with his argument about the motivation behind that status.Working in an IT department—albeit on the Web side of the group—I have to say that he projects way too much thought to the animus towards Macintosh. In my experience, the animosity is strictly knee-jerk and unthinking. |

New Scientist (Aug 15 2003 17:56 GMT) - ] The upper temperature limit at which life can exist has ] been extended to 121°C, 8°C higher than the previous ] record holder. The hardy organism, given the preliminary ] name Strain 121, was found at a "black smoker" ] hydrothermal vent on the floor of the northeast Pacific ] Ocean. This is cool. Its amazing to think that there is an organism out there whose DNA doesn't degrade at such temperatures, and whos proteins stay folded correctly. It will be neat to see what comes out of this research, as proteins found in organisms such as this can be put to use creatively in biotech. |
