Roundup bows before its fungal masters (Aug 15 2003 22:56 GMT)

- Ok, Monsanto makes the Roundup herbicide, along with various GM plants that can resist it. Roundup is also known as glyphosate, and it appears that in addition to being a weed killer, it's a fungus promoter, according to research by the Canadian government. This is timely news, because Monsanto is trying to get Roundup-resistant GM wheat into Canada, but wheat is particularly vulnerable to fusarium head blight (it destroys 20% of the wheat in Europe each year), so maybe it's not a good idea to apply chemicals that promote the stuff. Of course, I'm sure there's a second chemical in the works that will kill the fungus, and we'll probably see news of a chemical that will deal with the side effects of the second chemical which is needed for the first chemical that works in conjunction with the GM wheat that a lot of people don't want in the first place. On the other hand, the fungus makes the wheat pink, so maybe we'll see a return of pink party bread.

An opening appears for soy cracker spread (Aug 15 2003 22:56 GMT)

- ThisHumanForm reports that we may see an end to foie gras, at least in Israel, by 2005. The courts have finally accepted the argument that it's a wee bit cruel to stuff a tube down a goose's throat and slam food in so that the liver swells to a much larger than normal size. The ban won't take place until 2005 because employment's not so good right now, and this will give the industry a chance to find an alternative. For their part, the feed tube industry is pretty sure that it's impossible to find a cruelty free way to mutate a goose's liver from a technical point of view, if not by definition.

How vegan are your Clif Bars? (Aug 15 2003 22:56 GMT)

- So I'm checking the Clif Bar website, and they claim that their products are all free of animal ingredients, which is weird, because I could have sworn that I saw cholecalciferol (vitamin D3, from sheep or fish) mentioned on the packaging. I sent them a note about it, and this is part of their response:(This is for Canada only, as far as I know)"You're absolutely right, in July of 2002 we realized that our supplier for our vitamin/mineral blend was using Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which is indeed animal based.  We were very shocked by this discovery, as we specify to all our ingredient suppliers that we need everything to be completely animal free.  We immediately made a request to switch this ingredient out, and by August of 2002 we switched to Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol), which is not sourced from animals or animal products.
