Should Windows XP Be Free? Might Microsoft, threatened by Linux' incursions on its territory, someday decide to give away Windows to mitigate the Linux threat, much as it gave away Internet Explorer to squash Netscape? |

SCO Claims Copyright Trumps GPL (Aug 15 2003 23:07 GMT) - The legal battle over alleged unauthorized incorporation of Unix source code into Linux is leading to scrutiny of the GNU General Public License that covers the use and distribution of open-source software. In its $3 billion lawsuit against IBM, SCO has claimed commercial users of Linux are benefiting from SCO Unix V source code used by IBM in its AIX system and in Linux. |

Linux Hits Landmarks in Los Alamos Supercomputer Deals (Aug 15 2003 23:07 GMT) - Los Alamos National Laboratory announced plans with system builder Linux Networx to build a Linux cluster supercomputer, using AMD Opteron processors, that will rank among the top 10 of the world's fastest computers and will facilitate nuclear weapons research. Linux Networx touted the rapid deployment of the system, dubbed "Lightning," that is scheduled for delivery in September. |
