Treasure Hunting for Geeks (Aug 15 2003 23:52 GMT) - The Bounty Hunter: A really interesting article on how technology is transforming the treasure hunting business. Specifically, the article details the attempt to raise the Sussex and the estimated $4 billion she holds under roughly 20,000 feet of water. "A... |

Web hosts allowing many Mysql Databases? (Aug 15 2003 23:47 GMT) - I am currently looking for a reliable webhost that would allow me to run many (more than a dozen) Mysql databases. Any recommendations in this space would be appreciated. It's easy to find a hosting plan that suits your needs, but from my past experience 90% of all web hosters are either crooks or plain incompetent. Signing up for any service not recommended by people you know is asking for tro ... |

Who are you? What do you want? (Aug 15 2003 23:47 GMT) - There was once a show on TV called Babylon 5. That's right I'm a sci-fi dork. Anyway in this show there were 2 god-like races of aliens that were at war with one another and were dragging the lesser races into it with them. One race would ask, "who are you?" and the other would ask, "what do you want? |

What too much time did to me... (Aug 15 2003 23:47 GMT) - While browsing this collection of source code examples in 130 programming languages yesterday, I stumbled over one particular language (that by chance Jaz has also pointed out to me some days ago) by the name of Brainfuck. And since this sounded like designed with me in mind, I decided to write a short program in it that I can now proudly present to you: This thing does nothing but print a sequ ... |

Airbrush Before/After (Aug 15 2003 23:46 GMT) - Greg Apodaca maintains a remarkable page called Greg's Digital Portfolio. In it, he outlines visually some of the neat tricks that go on behind the scenes in advertising (and general digital artistry) every day, whether we like it or not. Many of the examples have magic mouse-over before/after shots, letting you oscillate between real and imagined till you're blue in the face. You really should check out Bikini (worksafe morph from Real Woman to Stuff/FHM girl), Blonde (what a difference a less-pointy head makes), and Mural (wow), as they're pretty damn clever, and the end results are remarkable. I was pretty impressed with Pets, too. |

Baroque Cycle Cycle (Aug 15 2003 23:46 GMT) - Wired Magazine has an interview with Neal Stephenson in their latest print edition. I won't spoil the interview for those still waiting for their copy to arrive, but the lead-in to the interview brings some very interesting information to light relating to The Baroque Cycle, Stephenson's upcoming trilogy of books. As jtl pointed out, we're aware of two books in the trilogy -- Quicksilver and The Confusion. We'd both assumed that Cryptonomicon would be either Book Two or Book Three, but the interview sets us straight. All three books in the Cycle appear to take place in the 17th century, and here's the best bit -- Volume Two is said to ship six months after Volume One(Release Date: |
