Bleh. (Aug 15 2003 23:14 GMT) - No entries from the last two days, thanks to Verizon, an extraordinarily stupid support person, and that damned worm. I could rant, but lack the interest, to be honest. But that's why there have been no items. I'll see if... |

Transhumanism is a Dead End! (Aug 15 2003 23:14 GMT) - This started as a comment on Rickyjames' news story The Wannabe Cyborgs Grow Up, but it got too long, so I am posting it in the Commentary section. The flaw in the transhumanist worldview is not that it seeks changes from the human condition as we have previously known it -- for what major advance in science and technology does not produce change? -- but that it ignores so many aspects of humanity that we have yet to understand. I am not a transhumanist, a statement that may strike some of my readers as strange. Have I not always been a proponent of genetic engineering? |

"We have discovered a species thought extinct in Borneo," Mohd Azlan told Reuters by telephone from East Malaysia, where he led a research project for University Malaysia Sarawak and the state forest department. |

The Wannabe Cyborgs Grow Up (Aug 15 2003 23:14 GMT) - Below are the first few paragraphs and a link to a facinating article by George Dvorsky from his latest editorial posting on Betterhumans - great site, check it out. Expect to see it added to our growing left-hand-column media list this week along with some others. Do you hope to become a cyborg someday? Would you like to modify and enhance your genome and those of your offspring, perhaps even acquiring some animal characteristics? Does the prospect of living as an uploaded consciousness in a supercomputer appeal to you? |
