Ethiopian Psalms to be returned (Sep 30 2003 16:59 GMT) - From the Independent: Ethiopian Psalms to be returned. An ancient, handwritten copy of the Bible's Book of Psalms is to be returned to Ethiopia 135 years after it was looted by British soldiers during the bloody siege of Magdala city. The 300-year-old book, 7in square and written in the old Ethiopian language of Ge'ez, was part of a huge haul taken by troops in the 1868 invasion of Ethiopia to free Western diplomats imprisoned by Emperor Theodore II. After the battle, the soldiers loaded 200 mules and 15 elephants with gold crowns, swords, altar slabs and manuscripts, then burned the... |

Fit The Punishment To The Crime (Sep 30 2003 16:58 GMT) - You tell me, what kind of punishment could they possibly devise to bring "justice" to this kind of sick bastard? German judges handed an eight months jail sentence on Monday to a former police officer who heads a paedophile group and is campaigning to make it legal for adults to have sex with children. An appeal court in the western city of Trier confirmed the term for Dieter Gieseking, 48. He was convicted of circulating on the Internet a document advocating the sexual abuse of children. In March, a lower court sent him to jail, saying he was repeat offender. |

Famine (Sep 30 2003 16:57 GMT) - I was watching a special on the Irish potato famine the other night, so it was kind of cool when I ran across this pointer to a post on Sean Gallagher's Rant Central titled "Of Patches and Potatoes: Windows, Monocultures, and Bad Things Happening".
