Canada/Personal: Friends Don't Let Friends Become Rad Trads (Sep 30 2003 18:43 GMT) - In the world of Catholic blogs, a "rad trad" is someone who is a "radical traditionalist," which is to say someone who applies traditional Catholic theological and moral thinking in a fashion inspired by a radical political ideology, one that typically maps on to right-wing thought but not always, since rad trads often disdain capitalism, for example. They are thus as suspicious of the present Holy Father as they are of Paul VI. In any case, the term nicely describes a whole slew of folks for whom the Church is a members-only club and where all meditation upon the Gospel ended in 1870. Now, these kinds of Catholics have always existed, although I suspected they've become more vocal and indignant since the 1960's where, both rightly and wrongly, they see the worst excesses of the modern world begin to injure the Body of Christ. What's unfortunate is that I've seen at least one friend of mine slowly make the journey toward radical traditionalism and it's quite saddening to me. |

THE STORY GOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS (Sep 30 2003 18:43 GMT) - Valerie Plame was supposedly an undercover agent. She allegedly used her maiden name (Valerie Plame, rather than Valerie Wilson) while undercover to disguise her identity. Being an undercover agent, she couldn't let anyone know that she was really the wife of an Ambassador -- and therefore clearly connected to the American foreign policy and intelligence establishment. If that were the case, her contacts might not trust her. Right? |

Bush's 'Humble' Foreign Policy, Pt. 37 (Sep 30 2003 18:40 GMT) - John Walters, the factually and jurisdictionally challenged director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, traveled to Rome recently to deliver a major finger-wagging to the Dutch, who he accused of being insufficiently enthusiastic about snuffing out the ecstasy trade. Walters said police should be given greater powers to tap telephone conversations and Dutch authorities should make more use of criminal infiltrators […] This means that in order for them to infiltrate drugs gangs, justice authorities allow the informers to engage in criminal acts. But such investigation methods were banned in the Netherlands in the wake of the IRT affair in the 1990s, when a specialist police unit actively imported huge amounts of drugs while infiltrating drugs gangs. In response, Boris Dittrich, head of the Dutch political party Democrat D66, pointed out that "we are not a province of America." (Link via Colby Cosh) |
