Interview: by-laws in Galway (Sep 30 2003 20:59 GMT) - I've posted previously about the proposed by-laws in Galway, relating to leafleting and activities in public spaces. There is a vigorous campaign against the laws, and I recently interviewed one of the co-ordinators, Kieran Cunnane, via email. |

Duncan and Pauline: A Score and Five (Sep 30 2003 20:58 GMT) - Duncan has been quiet lately, his site hasn't been updated in almost three weeks. With most people these things come in spurts, and I understand that, but I decided to ping him anyway to make sure everything was alright. He has other things going on, but he told me that today is his 25th Anniversary! So, even if he doesn't have time to say anything about it on his site, I've mentioned it here. Congratulations... |

Moby "can't see any good in coming from punishing people for being music fans and making the effort to hear new music." Right on dude! He says he's tempted to use Kazaa to download some of his own music, just to see if he got sued. |

Re: enclosures in RSS (Sep 30 2003 20:58 GMT) - Yes, you are right. But you said, not all your subscibers want to make an automatic download. The best would be, to provide a new check-box for in the news-list, to enable your subscribers to decide, wether the download should be made (next night) or not. There could be a default option for marking all or deselect all and then manually select or deselect one ore some of them. Try to put it on the wishlist at userland. |

McCarthy & Schumer Duping Pro-gunners Into Supporting Gun Control (Sep 30 2003 20:57 GMT) - Please urge your Senators and Representative NOT to cosponsor the Schumer-McCarthy bill. Don't think that just because your congressman is 'pro-gun' that he won't sign onto this bill. Some relatively good legislators have been duped into cosponsoring it. So your elected officials need to hear from you. After reading the alert, please send them the pre-written letter below. |

Unarmed for the Election (Sep 30 2003 20:57 GMT) - Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent appearance on the Sean Hannity Show regarding gun control suggests that he is amazingly ignorant of current gun laws in California. Hannity asked Schwarzenegger what he thought of the 'assault-weapon' ban and the Brady Bill. Schwarzenegger replied, 'Yes I do support that. And also I would like to close the loophole on the gun shows.' While the federal ban on so-called 'assault weapons' is scheduled to sunset in September 2004, the much more severe California prohibition has no sunset date. |

Violence Policy Center Launches AW Ban Campaign and Website (Sep 30 2003 20:57 GMT) - With less than one year until the federal assault weapons ban expires, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) today launched an aggressive new campaign and companion website, www.banassaultweapons.org, aimed at renewing and strengthening the federal assault weapons ban. The website demands action by President Bush, asking, 'President Bush, where do you stand?' Although the President has indicated support for renewing the ban, the White House has made no effort to ensure that it happens. |

MD: Lawmakers seek ban on "sniper rifle" (Sep 30 2003 20:57 GMT) - Two Maryland lawmakers want rifles like the one used in the sniper attacks last year added to a statewide ban on assault weapons, as the federal restriction on such weapons expires next year. Sen. Rob Garagiola of Montgomery County and Delegate Neil F. Quinter of Howard County, both Democrats, are sponsoring the 'assault weapons-ban bill' in their respective legislative chambers for the second year in preparation for the lifting of the federal ban on assault weapons in September next year. On Target: Improved Background Checks (Sep 30 2003 20:57 GMT) - In a gratifying bipartisan moment, members of Congress usually on opposite sides of the gun-control divide announced agreement last week on what would be the first major gun control legislation to be enacted in a decade. The bill would give states cash to update their records on people who cannot legally own guns, and to send that data to the National Instant Criminal Background Check system, known as NICS. That federal system for screening would-be gun buyers is only as good as the information in its computerized data base. Right now, that's not very good. Too many states have spotty data or, for technical reasons, fail to share what they have with Washington. |

Scoble hangs out with David Temkin of Laszlo (Sep 30 2003 20:56 GMT) - I've been trying to get David Temkin to start blogging for a while now. Hopefully if he starts to see results from me, Scoble and Sarah blogging about Laszlo - that'll tip the scale towards him finding the time. I think he could easily become one of the leading A-list bloggers.... Anyway - it's great to see Scoble grokking Laszlo. |

Astronomical Surface Decorations on Ceramics, ... (Sep 30 2003 20:56 GMT) - Astronomical Surface Decorations on Ceramics, Indonesia part I After yesterday's attempt to find Korean examples, I think it is time to move on. Next on our list of Astronomical Civilizations is Indonesia. Indonesia can trace its roots in the study of astronomy at least as far back as Ptolemy of Alexandria (87-150 AD) when he wrote that they had advanced astronomy. While I can find a few examples of Indonesian pottery on the Internet, it is difficult to get a history of indigenous ceramic art. I did find one mention that pottery was introduced there in 2500 to 500 B. |
