Two Rappers Rapping (Oct 01 2003 17:59 GMT) - From Wired: Rappers in Disharmony on P2P. Two popular rappers added their voices to the debate over file sharing in the Senate on Tuesday, a platform usually dominated by the music industry's lobbying group. The Recording Industry Association of America keeps a united front, but LL Cool J and Chuck D candidly shared their opposing views on file sharing and its effect on the industry. No Screener Copies For Oscar Judges (Oct 01 2003 17:59 GMT) - First of all, I don't give a hoot about the Oscar awards. But this has got to be one of the stupidest decisions I've ever heard: Oscars Screen Scratched. Apparently Academy Award voters are going to have see movies the old-fashioned way--in movie theaters. The major studios have agreed to go along with the Motion Picture Association of America's proposal to stop the sending out DVD and video screeners to those who vote for the Oscars and other Hollywood awards. |

Digital Cameras And Depth Of Field (Oct 01 2003 17:59 GMT) - Here's an interesting article for digital camera owners: Depth of field and your digital camera. It explains something that I've noticed for a long time. With a digital camera, it's very difficult to take a shot that has a very shallow depth of field. For the typical digital camera user, a wide depth of field is good -- it ensures that their photos will be in focus. |

They creep quietly beneath bed sheets in the darkness of night, in search of a blood feast from an unsuspecting, slumbering host. They engorge themselves with blood and disappear with the same stealth. Once thought virtually eradicated in the United States, the bedbug is back. |

More On Microsoft vs. Lindows (Oct 01 2003 17:59 GMT) - A few days ago I linked to a "shut-down" letter from Microsoft to Lindows. Here's the reply letter from Lindows. I am surprised at some of your objections, specifically your protests that digital signatures are not valid. You seem to have no objections when digital signatures are used to attempt to build Microsoft's profits such as with MSN, Expedia, or .Net. |

Doppelganger (Oct 01 2003 17:58 GMT) - I’m standing at the fax machine, yet again, and decide to review the attached "General Durable Power of Attorney" that the sellers of the house sent us last week. A legal document through and through, my first instinct is to leave it on the counter and stare blankly into space while waiting for the transmission to finish, but some vague recollection of advice I was given makes me stop and peruse the item. Friday is the First Annual BACKUP DAY! (Oct 01 2003 17:58 GMT) - This is a public service announcement. Last year on October 3rd, I decided to download Redhat's new OS with the cool new Bluewave UI and couldn't wait to try it out on my Dell using a back up hard drive. You can see the article here: My Life as a Cautionary Tale What happened was that I forgot to swap drives, and instead wiped my working Windows hard drive off the map, erasing 8 months worth of work, emails, etc. from the last time I backed up. |

Answerbus: get answers from the collective web consciousness (Oct 01 2003 17:57 GMT) - You dont have time to scale that nearby mountain to ask a wisened, bearded guru for the answer to the meaning of life, or perhaps time to run down to the auto repair shop to ask about that pinging sound in the back of your car. Instead you might challenge this site with your questions - you may find that it actually sorta answers them. So far it's got about 70% accuracy - which is pretty good for an unthinking machine... |
