sparse: A dictionary based sparse matrix class (Oct 01 2003 18:25 GMT) - 'sparse' is a matrix class based on a dictionary to store data using 2-element tuples (i,j) as keys (i is the row and j the column index). The common matrix operations such as 'dot' for the inner product, multiplication/division by a scalar, indexing/slicing, etc. are overloaded for convenience. When used in conjunction with the 'vector' class, 'dot' products also apply between matrics and vectors. Two methods, 'CGsolve' and 'biCGsolve', are provided to solve linear systems. |

The success of Matt 'Scoop Brady' Drudge (Oct 01 2003 18:25 GMT) - Noah Shachtman writes today in Salon that Matt Drudge has a newfound appreciation for Republican scandal. I don't buy the premise -- as my quotes in the article attest -- but I was happy to pass along something I found in January: Drudge's $2,350 contribution to the Republican Party. Although Drudge is the journalistic Mozart to my Saliere -- he's self-taught, laughably inept, and rich from reporting; I'm a J-school grad, reasonably competent, and out of the field -- sometimes I have to admire his achievement. |

Wi-Fi vs. 3G (Oct 01 2003 18:24 GMT) - This article is really hard to decipher: But the point seems to be that SkyNetGlobal, a Wi-Fi operator in Australia, is preparing to support voice on its network by working with a clearinghouse, HotSpot Global. It seems that the clearinghouse will support roaming for users of Wi-Fi enabled phones, but it's not clear if the idea here is to let customers roam from one operator's network to the next or just to let customers roam within one service provider's network. Regardless, the interesting poi... |

3G Base Stations Have Ill Affect (Oct 01 2003 18:24 GMT) - A study done in the Netherlands shows that 3G base stations make people sick: It's unclear how close you'd have to stand to base stations, which are located at cellular towers, before you start getting a headache or nauseous. But the study showed that people felt sick when exposed to the 3G base stations but not when exposed to current generation gear. The Dutch government said they'll do more research on this.... |
