A little fact is a ... (Oct 01 2003 19:43 GMT) - A little fact is a dangerous thing Since I'm talking on Saturday at BloggerCon about blogs and journalism, I've been thinking about what seems to me to be the central issue in this field: trust. Here is a semi-formed essay -- consider it a sort of notes-in-progress. Three weeks ago, reading a New York Times "Political Memo" piece (9/7/03) by Adam Nagourney, my eyes scanned the following sentence: "Perpetuating a widely circulated myth, a senior adviser to a Dean rival recently sent an e-mail message saying, 'You do know that he is the Dean of Dean Witter, don't you? |

Sharia and Secularism (Oct 01 2003 19:42 GMT) - Sorry, should have quoted this in the last AEL post. (also from the AEL vision) In the Islam religion and politics are not seperated. Attempts to limit the Islam to the private sphere (the so called Euro-Islam) are aimed at deactivating the Islam. Secularism is therefore rejected. There it is: |

'Norway Lifts Ban on Forbidden Films ' (Oct 01 2003 19:42 GMT) - Yahoo Norway's national film board lifted a ban on hundreds of films that were deemed too sexually explicit or violent, including 1994's "On Deadly Ground" starring Steven Seagal (news) and the 1990 gangster epic "Miller's Crossing." The decision came after several of the films, banned between 1913 and 1999, were deemed not so objectionable to the Nordic country of 4.5 million, which has deep roots in Lutheran piety. "Many of these films were banned in different times. |

'India Blocks Almost All Yahoo! Forums' (Oct 01 2003 19:42 GMT) - ABC News A government ban on an Internet discussion group run by an obscure separatist movement has ended up blocking access to popular, unrelated Yahoo forums in nearly all of India. Over the past two weeks, India's dozens of Internet service providers have been told by the government to block access to a Yahoo! Inc. discussion group called "Kynhun - Bri U Hynniewtrep." The forum, which has about two dozen members, is run by a separatist group called Hynniewtrep International Liberation Council. |

Blogger News Item (Oct 01 2003 19:41 GMT) - Happy Thoughts I know I have been bitching a hell of a lot on this blog. It’s become the way I vent my frustrations at the world. It started with an honest anger at my government and how I felt we were treated, then it slowly developed into a persona I liked playing with. |

Time To Pay Wireless Carriers To Keep Telemarketers From Calling You (Oct 01 2003 19:40 GMT) - Now that it looks like telemarketers might possibly have to stop making telemarketing calls to your landlines, and carriers might possibly have to allow you to transfer your landline numbers to your mobile phones - it appears that the telemarketers also want to be able to reach you on your mobile phone. Right now, most such calls are illegal (though, they still happen all the time), though you can add your mobile phone to the national "do not call" list to make it more official (or, less official and more up for grabs if the list gets tossed by the courts). An industry trade group, however, is proposing a directory of mobile phone numbers that will allow anyone searching for you (whether it's a long lost friend or a telemarketer) to request your mobile phone number. This wouldn't be a "white pages" solution, as only directory assistance operators would (in theory) have access to the directory. Of course, many people like the fact that their mobile phone number isn't listed anywhere. |
