Social Networking Meets File Sharing Meets Music Buying (Oct 01 2003 22:34 GMT) - My big complaints against music downloading services like iTunes is that they take away all of the benefits of file sharing. That is, there's a central server so bandwidth and hosting costs are still high and you lose the community aspect of people learning from each other what music is good. So, it's good to see that there's yet another new digital music selling service that is trying to get around both of these issues. Founded by former McAfee CEO Srivats Sampath, Mercora, will let people buy songs to download, but the downloads will come from other Mercora users. Also, it takes a page from the social networking craze and tries to link you to groups of like-minded individuals in order to recommend music you might like. |

Blogger News Item (Oct 01 2003 22:32 GMT) - This is interesting from my data regurgitating normal job point of view. RSS-Data: A Proposed Format Expanding the role of RSS into data-oriented applications For well over 5 years, I've been excited about the role of syndication in evolving how the Internet is used and applied, and am thrilled with the progress that's been made with RSS as a common standard for content syndication, and with SOAP web services for application integration and communication. |

Blogger News Item (Oct 01 2003 22:32 GMT) - Microsoft to lift lid on Longhorn OS "Microsoft Corp. will share more details on the next version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, at its Professional Developers Conference (PDC) next month. However, the company likely will keep the new user interface, dubbed Aero, under wraps. Aero may make a cameo appearance in Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates' opening keynote, but is not finished yet and likely won't be included in the pre-beta release of Longhorn that will be handed out to PDC attendees, according to sources familiar with Microsoft's PDC plans. Also, Aero is not on the calendar of sessions at the show. |

Blogger News Item (Oct 01 2003 22:32 GMT) - I read a bit more on the new Blimp today. "Akron has suddenly taken an important role in the drive to make the country's borders safer, with an old friend -- the blimp -- drafted to do the job. The city where airships were first built in 1924 and where lighter-than-air ships were made during World War II could be the birthplace of a new generation of super-sleuth blimps. |
