Don't Rush out to buy into this line of drivel (Oct 02 2003 00:58 GMT) - If Rush Limbaugh and his enablers over at ESPN were really keen to smash NFL stereotypes, there's no better place to begin than by making sure "Playmakers" gets canceled before the next episode hits the airwaves. |

FCC Approves iPAQ h4155 (Oct 02 2003 00:54 GMT) - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given Hewlett Packard its approval to release a new iPAQ in the United States.Though leaked information had already given a fairly complete picture of this model, the documents filed with the FCC disagree with the previous information in a few areas. In addition, it lays to rest a rumor about this device's sister model, the iPAQ h4355. |

Details on Nextel's i930 Smartphone from Motorola (Oct 02 2003 00:54 GMT) - Earlier today we linked to Gizmodo's information on the new i930 Smartphone from Motorola which Nextel is planning to sell. We've now received additional leaked photos and details about this device. What excites me most about this device is that the top right image appears to show a half-sized external display featuring a photo caller ID feature. Interestingly, this isn't mentioned in the "Features" list below. Either way, the i930 is not expected to be available until the end of next year so it could be a long time before we learn any more. |

Dell Media Experience Review (Oct 02 2003 00:54 GMT) - Microsoft has upgraded XP MCE to a new version, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004, an evolutionary upgrade that fixes major customer complaints, improves stability and performance, and adds numerous new features. XP MCE customers can upgrade to XP MCE 2004 cheaply, through their PC makers, but that doesn't help existing XP Home and Pro users, as there is still no upgrade path to XP MCE from those versions. You must still buy a Media Center PC if you want the new software. |

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 Review (Oct 02 2003 00:54 GMT) - Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 is one of the stealthiest major software releases Microsoft has ever released. Several months in the making, and several beta machines later, I'm still surprised that the company didn't do anything throughout 2003 to build excitement for the new version, which ships September 30, 2003 with a variety of new and modified Media Center PCs from a number of PC makers, including notable new additions Sony and Dell. In this review, I'll examine the new software release, its myriad new features, and the various other supporting technologies that are becoming available now to Media Center owners for the first time. So buckle up, digital media fans, it's going to be a long but rewarding ride. |

Scientists Mistakenly Believe Our DNA Is More Human Than It Is (Oct 02 2003 00:53 GMT) - A curious press release I received today, presented without further comment... ARLINGTON, VA - October 1, 2003 - Despite the casual familiarity most scientists display towards the Human Genome Project, only one in five scientists knows that approximately one-half of the human genome is made up of transposable elements. When members of The Science Advisory Board were asked to guess what fraction of the human genome is comprised of transposable elements, a surprising 82% of the 1,000+ respondents guessed incorrectly. |

From Teen Stock Scammer To Top Stock Picker? (Oct 02 2003 00:52 GMT) - Three years ago, the SEC made a big splash by fining a 15-year-old kid who had been caught touting penny stocks via spam on message boards. He made nearly three-quarters of a million dollars that way, and only had to give back $250,000. At the time, I thought it was ridiculous, but he claimed (and others agreed) that what he did was really no different than what many analysts on Wall Street did (minus the the fake names and completely made up facts - though, some may say that Wall Street was guilty of that as well). Later, author Michael Lewis wrote about the details of the Jonathan Lebed case and suggested there was much more to it, than the original report suggested. Basically, he makes a strong case for the idea that the kid didn't really do that much wrong, and the SEC was just looking for a scapegoat - and couldn't even fully explain how what the kid did was any worse than what regular analysts do. |
