PERSONALIZED/CONTEXTUAL SEARCH COMES TO GOOGLE (Oct 02 2003 05:23 GMT) - Google recently announced its purchase of Kaltix, a company specializing in contextual and personlized search. Kalitix, which has been covered by this website in the past, was formed three months ago by members of Stanford's PageRank research group. The three members were former Google interns in the search-relevance department. The Google Weblog has a good summary of the issues surrounding personalized search:Personalized search is an obvious next step, but Google has some interesting concerns. |

Odd DNS issue (Oct 02 2003 05:21 GMT) - Ever since the whole VeriSign issue came up, I have had a slight issues. I get 404 errors on sites that others have no problem reaching, and this is more than a little annoying as one of them is mine. I am not sure if it was the original VeriSign hijacking, or the aftermath that caused this, even though in the end it doesn't matter. I also do not know what the solution is to this particular problem. Are Shaw's DNS server's out of date? |

"Kuwait foils smuggling of chemicals, bio warheads from Iraq" (Oct 02 2003 05:21 GMT) - From the Hindustan Times: Kuwaiti security authorities have foiled an attempt to smuggle $60 million worth of chemical weapons and biological warheads from Iraq to an unnamed European country, a Kuwaiti newspaper said on Wednesday. The pro-Government Al-Siyassah, quoting an unnamed security source, said the suspects had been watched by security since they arrived in Kuwait and were arrested "in due time." It did not say when or how the smugglers entered Kuwait or when they were arrested. The paper said the smugglers might have had accomplices inside Kuwait. |

A MUST READ: WHO LOVES SPECIAL COUNSELS? (Oct 02 2003 05:20 GMT) - Liberal Oasis does the research and unearths the Find of the Week: a classic Clinton-era transcript of MONUMENTAL political hypocrisy - one that features (get this...), the now-deceased television commentator Rowland Evans (Robert Novak's former partner), interviewing then-Senator John Ashcroft (R-MO). Subject? How's about the Independent Counsel Statute, as it related to that exemplar of political criminality (cough): |

THANKS AGAIN! (Oct 02 2003 05:20 GMT) - For the last couple of weeks while the blog has collected cobwebs, our family has been kind of preoccupied. We've been learning about diabetes alongside Jesse, our youngest, who was recently diagnosed. Though that discovery initially threw us for a loop, today there's nobody in our constellation - including the teenage daughter's sweetheart of a boyfriend - who can't administer drama-free injections or fail to detect the tell-tale signs of low v. high blood sugar. I mean, we are good. |
