Firmware upgrades? (Oct 03 2003 13:56 GMT) - The Firmware of a mobile phone is the software, like a PC's operating system, that controls a handset's functions such as initialization, menus, speaker loudness, Bluetooth, etc... . Keeping your mobile phone firmware up-to-date is as important as updating your PC's operating system or installing the latest drivers. Why would you need to upgrade your phone's firmware? Because phone manufacturers are racing to release phones before their competitors and or in time for consumer "spending seasons", and most of the time the first batch of handsets have bugs; |

One step forwards, one step back... (Oct 03 2003 13:56 GMT) - After the funky 7600 Nokia then take a retrograde step with the 3660, and replace the most innovative external feature of the 3650 the psuedo rotary dial keypad with a clumsy looking traditional keypad. Now, I'm sure that the looks of the 3650's rotary keypad may have turned away some conservative potential buyers, but if they had to have bland the obvious choices are the Nokia 6600 or an identikit flipping silver handbag phone. The rotary keypad is probably the best feature of the 3650, sure it takes a few minutes to initially adjust, but the key spacing is good and it actually works very well. A number of people have reported being able to text faster on the 3650 because the rotary layout removes the usual two handed dilemma of which thumb is used for the middle row. I'm sure the 3660 will have some improved features, there's rumours of a 65,000 colour screen, Symbian OS 7. |

P900 On The Launch Pad (Oct 03 2003 13:56 GMT) - After the lazy days of summer all the new phones are really starting to emerge, hopefully the SonyEricsson P900 won't be as much of an anti-climax as the Motorola A920 - which incidentally looks even worse since news emerged that the A920's AGPS won't work on 3's network. The long awaited successor to the SonyEricsson P800 variously named the P810 or the P900 seems to have settled on the second name; the prototypes are apparantly labelled in various locations with either title depending on the age of the sub-assembly. I have a theory (wild-guess) that P810 was the initial name, to bring it in line with the T610 and to indicate a family relationship with the P800, however no-one had noticed that there's already a phone by NEC called the P810! There are reviews of prototype P900 phones on Mobile-review and Mobile BPit (in French), and at this late stage these phones are likely to be close to the production articles. |

Sumar o Restar?

Eastern England: Site Dig Points To Rich Historical Seam (News by Kozmik_Ken) (Oct 03 2003 13:55 GMT) - It will soon be a shrine to the modern age of commercialism, where shoppers park their cars as they head into the city. But excavation work on the new park-and-ride site at Harford, south of Norwich, has revealed an insight into a rich and intriguing period of the area's ancient history. The discoveries made at the site, next to the junction of the A140 and A47 Southern Bypass, have been described as "one of the most important" finds ever recorded in Norfolk. |
