Australia welcomes re-trial in Cambodia backpacker murder case (Oct 03 2003 23:38 GMT) - The Australian government has welcomed a decision in Cambodia to re-try a senior Khmer Rouge commander accused of the killing of Australian backpacker David Wilson. The Cambodian Court of Appeal has ordered that Chhouk Rin face court on October 27 for the murder of Mr Wilson and two European friends in 1994. The retrial was granted after the Court of Appeal overturned Chhouk Rin's acquittal of the killings in a lower court. A spokesman for Australia's foreign affairs minister, Alexander Downer, says the government has repeatedly urged Cambodia to bring those responsible for the killings to justice. |

All new Cambodian MPs to attend swearing-in ceremony (Oct 03 2003 23:38 GMT) - All 123 of Cambodia's newly elected members of parliament will attend a swearing-in ceremony on Saturday, organised by King Norodom Sihanouk. Officials and analysts say the move could ease the country out of its political deadlock since the July 27 national elections. Officials from Cambodia's three main parties all say they have agreed to attend the event, which should have taken place at the inauguration of parliament last weekend. The inauguration was attended only by the ruling Cambodian People's Party of the prime minister, Hun Sen, after a boycott by the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and the royalist FUNCINPEC party. |
