RFID Moves into Public Library (Oct 05 2003 19:59 GMT) - The RFID story continues to get some good press. Not suprisingly, the EFF Has Privacy Concerns. An AP Story looks at San Francisco Public Library's plans to track books by inserting computer chips into each tome. Another AP Article says a University of Pittsburgh electrical engineer has developed a "smart tag" that he says addresses consumer privacy advocates' concerns surrounding radio frequency identification tags, which are becoming the next generation of bar codes. The NYTimes has a good general look at applications for RFID tags. |

'First reader' celebrates written word (Oct 05 2003 19:59 GMT) - The Associated Press is reporting on the third annual National Book Festival. Characterized as "first reader of our land" by Librarian of Congress James Billington, Bush, a former librarian and teacher, praised American authors for their "tales of mystery, history and heroism." She just returned from a book festival in Russia with Lyudmila Putin, wife of President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Motivated after attending Bush's book festival last year, the Russian first lady organized her own festival in Moscow. |

Museum discovers Lewis & Clark letters (Oct 05 2003 19:59 GMT) - The Associated Press Reports Three letters that explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark wrote during and after their expedition 200 years ago are on view at the Cincinnati Museum Center. The letters had been in the Cincinnati Historical Society's archives since 1885. They were donated by Aaron Torrence, son of an executor for the estate of James Findley, a soldier who was an associate of the explorers but didn't go on their expedition. |

Rare photos given to San Francisco museum (Oct 05 2003 19:59 GMT) - Charles Davis writes "Story from bayarea.com The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art's venerable photography collection has grown noticeably richer with the donation of more than 100 ``rare and precious'' photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries by some of the medium's most important practitioners. Collectors Carla Emil, a member of the museum's board of trustees, and her husband, Rich Silverstein, a San Francisco advertising executive, have agreed to give the museum works by such seminal 19th century photographers as Eugene Atget, Julia Margaret Cameron and Lewis Carroll and such 20th century masters as Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Alfred Steiglitz and Paul Strand." |

Owners of Dewey Decimal System (yes, owners) sue Library Hotel (Oct 05 2003 19:59 GMT) - Just in case you're not sick of the OCLC V. The Library Hotel story, Here's Another Article from the Star Tribune that sums things up nicely. "Dewey copyrighted his system early on and set up a company, Forest Press, to sell it, although he often donated his system to needy libraries. He never intended to get rich with his system, said Wayne Wiegand, a professor of library and information studies at Florida State University and the author of a Dewey biography." |

ClickOnce to Debut in 'Whidbey' (Oct 05 2003 19:58 GMT) - Microsoft developers are rushing to put the finishing touches on more than just its next-generation Windows client to debut at its Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in late October. In addition to delivering a technical preview release of Longhorn, Microsoft also is hoping to be able to provide attendees with a first beta of its "Whidbey" Visual Studio tool suite release. Whidbey went to a select group of alpha testers this summer. Microsoft is hoping to deliver the final Whidbey code in the latter half of 2004. (Meryl) |
