Doctors 'failing manic depressives' (Oct 06 2003 17:59 GMT) - People with manic depression are being urged to demand better medical care: "The Manic Depression Fellowship says many doctors fail to provide patients with enough information or choice over which drugs they take. It says this can cause people to stop taking their medication, increasing their risk of committing suicide. The charity has now published a document outlining the different treatments available so they can demand a better standard of care. Manic depression or bipolar disorder affects around two in every 100 people in the UK. |

Prison Sex (Oct 06 2003 17:59 GMT) - I've always had a less stringently minimalist reading of the Constitution than weblogger extraordinaire Radley Balko, and we've argued about it in the past, but I think he really goes off the rails in a recent TechCentralStation piece on federal legislation aimed at curbing prison rapes. The argument for federal involvement is that the constitutional prohibition on "cruel and unusual punishment" (and perhaps also the "equal protection" requirement, to the extent that the discretion of prison officials or the character of the particular prison determines who shall be protected from his fellow inmates) as incorporated by the 14th Amendment empowers the feds to protect the civil rights of citizens against state incursion. Radley's counter runs as follows: [T]he Eighth Amendment protects us from state-imposed cruel and unusual punishment. I'm relatively certain that no state explicitly sentences convicted felons to prison rape. |

The FBI Debit Card Scam (Oct 06 2003 17:59 GMT) - OK, since Barney got screwed by the latest PayPal scam, I figured I'd post this one not only to make sure that he's aware of it, but you are, too. I just got this sent to me via e-mail in what looked like an official FBI e-mail (I wouldn't know what an official e-mail looks like, as I've never gotten one). But it was from "government@fbi.gov":Dear inhabitant USA. |

Telemarketing: Fair is Fair (Oct 06 2003 17:56 GMT) - Dave Barry is at it again, giving out the phone number to the ATA (American Telemarketing Association) and leaving it up to his readers to decide what to do with that number. Argument in favor of calling telemarketers: As one [Dave Barry] e-mailer put it: ``I think we should call... |

Swoosh (Oct 06 2003 17:54 GMT) - At the moment half of Vienna is wondering whether it's true that shoe manufacturer Nike wants to install a giant swoosh on Vienna's Karlsplatz or if the whole thing is just an elaborate hoax. Nike says they have no such plans and blames a group of Austrian online artists, who in turn say they have nothing to do with it either. The domain is registered to a guy who lives in Barcelona. Well, I guess we'll see if the swoosh materialises on January 1st or not. |

Cabin Fever (Phoenix) (Oct 06 2003 17:54 GMT) - Going on my third day in bed now, after knee surgery. Raven has been sooooooooooo incredibly sweet and loving and patient with me. She has doted on me and loved on me and pampered me to no end. The poor folks watching our SlaveCam have probably been bored to tears watching me sit in bed with my laptop, or confused as hell when they see Raven walk in and serve me food, snuggle with me, or give me a quick teasing blowjob. It's hell to be the sick one. |
