Buzza Hill (Fieldnotes by pure joy) (Oct 06 2003 23:51 GMT) - Buzza Hill Entrance Graves - St.Mary's, Isles of Scilly - 3rd October 2003 Buzza Hill can be reached via a footpath up from the east end of Porthcressa Beach, or from just off Church Road (either a footpath from the Power Station, or via the Hospital Lane). It's well worth the short climb. Not only does the hill give you the best views back over Hugh Town but also it contains one existing entrance grave, one that was probably an entrance grave before a windmill was built on it in 1834 (and which is now ... |

Op Ed Piece Says Charter Schools Creating Healthy Education Market (Oct 06 2003 23:51 GMT) - An interesting column in the Arizona Republic says there are indications that successful charter schools may improve academic performance in traditional schools as well. The piece suggests that success is supposed to be determined through attracting students, not pleasing bureaucrats, and that charters are meeting a market demand for educational alternatives. |

Priorities.... (Oct 06 2003 23:50 GMT) - H1B visas have been slashed. In some personal correspondence godless thought that this was kind of ass-backwards (my words). After all, there are fewer H1B workers than unskilled legal & illegal immigrants. So what gives? On this blog we've talked... |

ROI of Web Services. [Kaleem Aziz] (Oct 06 2003 23:49 GMT) - During many discussions on the topic of Web Services, compared versus distributed system technologies like CORBA and J2EE, I've been told that XML based Web Services is too slow -- i.e., the performance will be the biggest bottleneck. While I agree that their concerns are true and real, (1) I suppose that they do not understand the economic labor that will have to go into to implement distributed system solutions, versus the Web Services solutions. And (2) I also suppose that they do not understand where organizations are with integration needs. |

(Oct 06 2003 23:47 GMT) - "'We've got a lot of Canadians wondering how it is that a Canadian citizen gets scooped up and sent off to jail in another country for a year and then arrives back and no one wants to investigate why,' said NDP Leader Jack Layton." |

Searching for Q3 Profits at Yahoo (Oct 06 2003 23:47 GMT) - It looks like the upcoming earnings call referred to by CNET is the last time that Yahoo will depend in external search revenue to make its numbers. Once Yahoo acquires Overture the revenue numbers all show up on the bottom line directly. Of course Yahoo will then be earning revenue no only on its own searches, but on the rest of the Overture network here in the US and internationally [summary] |
