Second installation of software messed up my main blog page (Oct 07 2003 20:59 GMT)

- I did it, I admit it, now how do I fix it? I tried to set up a second computer to access and update my blog pages. We use a blogg directory on our secure server as a repository for tech support information (Anybody else doing this with success?)After trying to set up the second computer I decided that wasn't going to work and abandoned my efforts. Now however, when I go to my blogg page none of my categories show up and none of my previous bloggs as available.

Global Networks: A KDD-SCS / Lucent Technologies Collaboration (Oct 07 2003 20:59 GMT)

- Traditional global networks have used SDH rings to provide TDM connectivity between shore stations with back-haul facilities to nearby major cities. In recent years, this architecture has been stressed due to increased bandwidth requirements, need for packet-switched data connectivity, and seamless city-to-city connections. A new view of global networks is emerging, consisting of a centric mesh network that integrates both submarine and terrestrial networks. This paper summarizes trends and discusses enabling technologies, and is a collaboration aimed towards embodying these trends in evolving global networks.

Hitachi Data Systems - Freedom GeoSAN: A Geographically Dispersed Systems Area Network (Oct 07 2003 20:59 GMT)

- Optical networking within a metropolitan area has finally become practical for the Enterprise. The Hitachi Freedom GeoSAN Network (Geographically Dispersed Systems Area Network) leverages that model by defining a series of solutions that are enabled by optical technologies and that extend access to data and devices throughout a metropolitan area. These solutions include but are not limited to Business Continuity, High Availability, Disaster Recovery, Information and Device Sharing and Access, Data Movement, and Systems Consolidation. Components of a GeoSAN could include servers, storage arrays, Fibre Channel switches, remote copy software, tape systems, channel extenders, routers, and other communications devices and systems required to implement a Systems Area Network. Optical networks allow communications systems such as the Storage Area Network (SAN) to be extended effectively across the metropolitan area.

Unleashing Server Performance Through Protocol Offload (Oct 07 2003 20:59 GMT)

- Skyscrapers filled with computers instead of people have become an increasingly common, and increasingly controversial, element in the evolution of the Internet and network-based computing. The logic of massive computer centers is compelling. Because costs of administration significantly outweigh hardware costs, it can be far cheaper to manage computers centrally. The number of clients and sessions a single server can manage depends on a variety of factors, including the CPU speed, amount of memory available, and network performance. As data centers attempt to scale up server performance, however, they often discover that a significant share - sometimes a majority - of server CPU cycles become devoted solely to transport protocol processing.

Texans Credit Union Pioneers Again With a Better Way to Conduct Personal Financial Business (Oct 07 2003 20:58 GMT)

- When your customer service history includes pioneering milestones like automated teller machines, interactive kiosks, phone-in banking and home-PC transactions, what do you do next? You put your services "out there" for customers who travel frequently and use Internet-ready cell phones and wireless personal data assistants (PDAs) such as the Palm VII. For Texans Credit Union, that meant going wireless with reliable, around-the-clock banking and bill paying, accessible coast-to-coast. Texans Credit Union executives knew they had to reduce the risks of being one of the first financial institutions to use the latest technology. So the executives demanded experience and found it in their partnership with EDS.

SWAN: Storage Wide Area Network (Oct 07 2003 20:57 GMT)

- Storage Area Networks, or SANs, are scalable networks based upon Fibre Channel (FC) protocols that support high-speed data transfers between servers and storage, between storage systems, and between servers. Fibre Channel provides a frame architecture that enables frames of data to be routed through a network of switching elements at high speeds. Although this is a major improvement over parallel SCSI distances of 25 meters, FC with optical fibre still limits a SAN to a campus or small metropolitan region. On the other hand, client/server networks can be extended from local area networks (LANs) to wide area networks (WANs) that span global distances. This paper introduces the concept of a Storage Wide Area Network (SWAN), discusses the business requirements for SWANs, provides an overview of the current state of SWAN capabilities, and speculates on the future implementation of SWANs.

Plnet Connects All Schools and Community Colleges to One Another and the Internet (Oct 07 2003 20:57 GMT)

- Before advent of the Provincial Learning Network (PLNet), schools and institutions around this western-most Canadian province had a wide range of telecommunications capabilities. This created a digital divide in which schools that could afford it had access to technology and the Internet. PLNet leveled the playing field so that all BC schools and institutions, regardless of their location or size, have universal Internet access. The British Columbia Ministry of Education chose EDS to manage the client relationships associated with PLNet's implementation and ongoing operation.
