Populism in a single image (Oct 07 2003 23:39 GMT)

- Great picture by Ilich Otero in today's Tal Cual (by subscription). A banner in front of a shack says "The new PDVSA belongs to the people", PDVSA the state oil company really belongs now to the revolution and its cronies only and is being used and abused right and left (many storties below on that issue). Sadly, down the line, the "new PDVSA" will contribute less to the standard of living of the poor than it has in the last ten years due to mismanagement.

Blog stuff I enjoyed over the last few days (Oct 07 2003 23:37 GMT)

- These are a couple things I enjoyed, but haven't had time to say more about: Joi Ito's: Stealth Disco'ed by Halley (which, btw, if you haven't also seen, builds on Joi's earlier posts on Stealth Disco, My First Stealth Disco and SD2). [SD2 is my favorite so far] Also from Joi: Do Not Call 317-816-9336, which is about Dave Barry posting the phone number for the American Teleservices Association, a telemarketing company, and lots of people subsequently calling them at inconvenient times .

Drinking at Lunch (Oct 07 2003 23:36 GMT)

- Now I've never been much of a daytime drinker - I get terrible mid-afternoon hangovers, as well as the anti-bonus of lost focus at work etc. Its just not something I like to do, even at the weekend. However, many people on Friday lunchtimes like to leave their place of work and have a pub lunch. This has always confused me. Not in terms of the employees having a pint or two at lunch - but in terms of the employers.
