Aber eingedenk des Gedankens eines Unbekannten Ärgere dich nicht, wenn du das Schiff verpaßt hast. Denk an die »Titanic«. stellt sich alles irgendwie gleich freundlicher dar.. Slashdotters debate compulsory licensing for books (Oct 07 2003 23:32 GMT) - Oh, this is fun. Over on Slashdot, they're debating compulsory licensing for books, not just music--following a post in the Yale Law Meme. A Slashdot poster writes:Many compulsory licensing schemes have been proposed to cover music alone, but most of the arguments in favor of a compulsory license for music apply equally as well to other media types. Millions share movies, P2P can't be stopped, the MPAA hasn't provided legitimate alternatives for what consumers want, etc. |

The Gatekeeper (Oct 07 2003 23:32 GMT) - Clements talks about implementing two way gate keepers: "What I see less often is a gatekeeper on outbound channels that verifies whether the currently executing local service adheres to the agreed communication contract. Validation on outbound messages is a proactive action taken in order to create trust with partners about the local service's ability to adhere to a contract. Furthermore, validation on outbound messages is quite often the last chance action before a well-known point of no return: the transaction boundary. |

Kristin Lavransdatter: The Cross (Oct 07 2003 23:31 GMT) - We were part of a Living Rosary tonight. You can really feel the power of the Rosary when a large group of people is saying it. There is a passage in the last of the Kristin Lavransdatter books, the one called The Cross, where the heroine is in a Church at a service (I don't remember what service it was) at night and suddenly sees the church she is in as a ship sailing in a great storm but keeping all of the people inside safe from the tempest outside. That's what it felt like in our church ... |

Mother of Writing: The Origin and Development of a Hmong Messianic Script (Oct 07 2003 23:31 GMT) - All this lather about orthographies got me to thinking about a book I read a couple of years ago called Mother of Writing: The Origin and Development of a Hmong Messianic Script. It's the story about Shong Lue Yang who claimed to be of divine origin and who invented the first true alphabetic script for Hmong. The book was written in part by William Smalley, a missionary, who in the '50s had also collaborated on developing the RPA (romanized popular alphabet). The RPA is one of a couple of other ... |

A Light in the Attic (Oct 07 2003 23:31 GMT) - Somedays you get to be reminded why you ventured into parenting. When Zach was in second grade his teacher sensed his interest in poetry, and gave him Shel Silverstein's Where The Sidewalk Ends. Since then he has acquired Shel's other (children's) works, and as I write this he is reading to me, with great delight, from A Light In The Attic. He visits both books frequently as if he were looking up an old friend who always makes him laugh, even though the stories never change. Here's a link to one ... |
