Helpline Comment (23938) (Oct 07 2003 23:19 GMT) - Heh, that's the problem with CPUs these days, instruction sets too big, cycle counts too variable, pipelines too long, etc. The fun is taken out of assembly programming when you're writing for a dozen differently behaving chips and can't even remember all the addressing modes. Now on a 6502... I know I can write better code than a compiler :) Too bad the internal logic of the 6502 doesn't lend itself to running at GHz speeds : |

"Sid, the boys are here." (Oct 07 2003 23:18 GMT) - Thank goodness I finally was able to take some time out this afternoon for lunch and Howard Bashman's interview (on How Appealing; on 20 Questions) with Judge Stanley F. Birch of the Eleventh Circuit. This may be my all-time favorite of Howard's 20 Questions series to date. These would be fantastic in audio... |

day 1: the rest of the day (Oct 07 2003 23:18 GMT) - After getting off the phone with my sister Thursday morning, I had to find a way to get to Richmond and then to my family's home (as I had reported, my car had become undrivable again after my return from Richmond the previous weekend). I immediately thought of my friend Craig, who'd loaned me his Santa Fe for almost two months this summer when he was vacationing in Europe. I had an old home phone number for him on my computer, though, and woke someone up--for which I'm very sorry, and I hope I didn't panic her with that 5:15 a.m. |

What the U. S. papers say (Oct 07 2003 23:17 GMT) - A brilliant article by Sarah Left, in the view from across the pond: What the U. S. papers say "But he's played spectacularly strong leaders in one cartoonish movie after another. As scary as it seems, for a lot of voters in California, that's reason enough to hand him the reins of their government," he writes. |

You have an air of power aroundyou - and that can sometimes scare people off. You're complex, and get hurt easily - so yourarely let people in if you can help it. |

Where workingmen unite: Lough Neagh fishermen form union (Oct 07 2003 23:16 GMT) - Martin DonnellyIt was a momentous day for the fishermen of Lough Neagh when they made history on Sunday 18 May in Brocagh Co Tyrone.
