Hosting: Protecting Against Spam. (Oct 08 2003 23:59 GMT) - "Spam annoys us all, but it threatens the very survival of Web hosting companies. Hosting a spammer can affect the performance of your infrastructure and your other customers. Even worse, it can put your block of IP addresses on the known-spammer lists, which in turn could shut down your entire operation by causing you to unwittingly violate your own hosting service or ISP's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)." Summit combines the catalogues of these libraries over the Web for students to search for and borrow items that are unavailable at their campus libraries. The books usually arrive within two or three days after students order them, Helmer said. |

UK tries to link virus authors with terrorism (Oct 08 2003 23:57 GMT) - Reuters says UK investigators are trying to find a link between computer viruses and terrorism or organized crime. The National Hi-Tech Crime Unit, or NHTCU, has started working with anti-virus firms to identify patterns in the source code of the most damaging Internet worms and virus programs to determine whether they are the work of organized subversive groups or crime syndicates. Book 'em, Dano (Oct 08 2003 23:56 GMT) - I'm both relieved that I'm getting moving out of the city, and not even remotely surprised.Federal law enforcement officials confirm that the FBI planted the listening devices found Tuesday in the offices of Philadelphia's mayor. However, they're refusing to comment on whether Mayor John Street is a target of an investigation or, if there is such an investigation, to provide any details about the nature of the probe.Nothing would make me happier than to see John Street and his staff get sent to the big house. He's smarmy and annoying, and he really hasn't done much for this city since taking office. |

Why is the FBI using Patriot Act against journalists? (Oct 08 2003 23:56 GMT) - A week old but still important: this lengthy SecurityFocus piece by Mark Rasch examines the FBI's use of obscure Patriot Act provisions to demand journalists' notes, apparently in violation of DoJ procedures . Read this, and remember that we are all journalists . There are really only three reasons the government would invoke the ISP statute against journalists. All of these possibilities are frightening in their implications. |
