Let The Convergence Wars Begin (Oct 08 2003 08:59 GMT) - For years we have been pitched on the idea of technology convergence in the family room. As Naval has pointed out here before, he's a true believer. And I must say, having finally gotten a chance to check out Naval's Home Theater PC, it is awesome. My favorite feature is his integration of MAME -- instant 80's video games at your fingertips. To my mind, convergence is a foregone conclusion. |

Minnesota Told To Stop Treating Vonage Like A Phone Company (Oct 08 2003 08:59 GMT) - It's been nearly two months since the state of Minnesota decided to use the ever-popular "looks like a duck, quacks like a duck" test to decide that Vonage must be a telephone company and told them they need to apply for a license and follow all telephone company regulations. Now, however, a Federal judge has said that Vonage should not be forced to follow those laws, saying that they're clearly different from a phone company. It appears that the judge has not yet issued a full ruling explaining the decision, but is expected to by the end of the week. |

It's me, Paul, remember? (Oct 08 2003 08:58 GMT) - I've been banking too much. At work, when we get super cynical about our jobs, we like to use "bank" as a verb. Like, "Yeah, man, I can tell you're fired up to bank today." Or perhaps, "Oh hell yeah,... |

Royd Edge and Oldfield Hill Earthworks, Meltham (Fieldnotes by Kozmik_Ken) (Oct 08 2003 08:57 GMT) - The earthworks lie either side of Wessenden Head Road between Marsden and Marsden Moor. Maps have variously described the sites as either settlements, homesteads or henges. Both earthworks are on farmland, so permission to visit needs to be requested from the nearby farmhouse. I last visited the site during the mid 1980's and only had time to see the Royd Edge earthwork. A roughly circular enclosure about ten yards in diameter, with one entrance and now partitioned by a modern drystone wall. |

Pointy Haired Bosses Concerned About Security, Using Own Name As Password (Oct 08 2003 08:53 GMT) - Top executives at many companies say that improving computer security is an absolute priority. So, why is it that they're still using their own first names as passwords and opening attachments from strangers? This does seem typical though. As much as folks hear about the importance of security, there's often a disconnect between understanding why security is important - and understanding how to be secure. In many cases, it's the old "convenience factor" that comes into effect. |

Anyone heard of/ used 'Refer-On'?? [Bruce McFarlane] (Oct 08 2003 08:53 GMT) - Hi, I have recently received a couple of spam e-mails and now a speculative mail from a networking company called Refer-On. They organise events that promise to ‘put your business in the spot light’ by inviting you to events where they promise NOT to invite any of local competition. It sounds a bit like the BRC i.e. you introduce not only yourself but also others you have met who may be relevant to each person you meet. |
