Start Saving Money Now (Oct 08 2003 18:59 GMT) - Just a reminder that KayBee should be marking (almost) everything down by 30%. As mentioned in our story a couple of weeks back, the sale –likely unmarked and not promoted—is from October 8th-14th. Now would be a good time to clean house, and remember, the more peg warmers purchased, the more space for new stuff to come in! |

Opportunities for Open Source software in the publishing industry (Oct 08 2003 18:59 GMT) - NewsForge has an article, Opportunities for Open Source software in the publishing industry, that looks at how to apply open source tools in the many areas of publishing. Publishing -- by firms that produce newspapers, magazines, books of all kinds, and even corporate documents -- is a very well understood business where the leaders are firms who have cut costs to the absolute minimum and exist on very thin margins, thanks to intense competition from other publishers and other media, including, nowadays, the Internet. "Open Source developers can also find lots of niche opportunities -- publishing is a huge and varied field, and these customers will listen to developers who can save them money. Where Gutenberg failed, an Open Source developer may well succeed." |

Frankfurt Book Fair Opens (Oct 08 2003 18:59 GMT) - Associated Press Reports on The 55th Frankfurt Book Fair opened Tuesday with a look at the role of books in today's world, from literature's rebirth in postwar nations such as Afghanistan and Iraq to its new face in post-communist Russia. The Book Fair Web Site is chock full o' bookie goodness. Something a little closer to home, for me at least, is the Southern Festival of Books. They say it boasts a particularly strong local and regional flavor, from Mount Juliet's Will Campbell to Hohenwald's William Gay to North Carolina's Lee Smith. Head on down to Tennessee and check it out. |

Some WI state libraries purging records (Oct 08 2003 18:59 GMT) - The Wisconsin Library Association has warned libraries about the new federal Patriot Act, leading some to purge circulation records to protect privacy, and others to begin warning patrons about the law's effects. Mark Corallo, a Justice Department spokesman in Washington, D.C., said last week that to get a search warrant under the Patriot Act, the FBI must show evidence to a federal judge that the records being sought would involve international terrorism or clandestine intelligence activities, which would be foreign spying. "The FBI," he said, "is prohibited from conducting investigations of U. |

Library tells homeless to move along (Oct 08 2003 18:59 GMT) - Private security officers recently began strictly enforcing rules against sitting on planters outside the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in Dallas TX and cracked down on the size of bags brought inside. Library employees have called the police on those who litter. The recent crackdown is the latest in response to long-standing complaints about homeless people bathing in library restrooms, muttering obscenities, panhandling outside, littering and forming a gantlet that makes some patrons uncomfortable. But many see it as another round in an endless cycle of dealing unsuccessfully with homelessness. |

Viideo citation and blogging frustration (Oct 08 2003 18:58 GMT) - A few months ago, I wrote about the tragic inaccessibility of audio and video content on the web. Today, while trying to summarize one of the key insights that came out of the BloggerCon conference I attended this past weekend, I was again reminded of this problem. The issue I want to highlight is the gap between what technically proficient users of the blogging medium (or indeed any kind of web authoring) can achieve, and what average users can achieve. Ironically the best way for me to make that point -- by citing portions of the webcast -- is yet another illustration of the problem. In several different sessions, people made compelling pleas for simplicity. |

Fauna and flora (Oct 08 2003 18:58 GMT) - We found two delicate plants last week in our quest to have more foliage in the house. One is a "cobra lily" which lives in peat moss and eats flies and spiders. We like spiders so for now it is under glass to keep humid and warm and away from tasty spiders. The other is a pretty fern, Evergeminiensis Pteris ensiformis, with leaves that look like they were painted with white. |

Pioneer's new AV receiver supports Windows Media Audio 9 (Oct 08 2003 18:57 GMT) - Pioneer is coming out with a new AV receiver called the VSA-AX10Ai-N that has support for Microsoft's new Windows Meda Audio 9 Professional format built-in. This means it can stream WMA 9 Pro files from a PC, including audio files in 5.1 channel surround sound. Combined with the recent news that Microsoft is trying to get its Windows Media Video 9 format accepted as an industry standard for video compression, this gives a pretty good indication that the next big push for Microsoft will be to get their software running on as many stereos and DVD players as possible.
