Another long break.... (Oct 09 2003 23:59 GMT) - Stephen Callaghan Thursday, October 9 2003, 01:29 pm OK so I went to Chicago, bought my iPod. It's really really REALLY cool. Much nicer than other ones I've seen, sturdy and the backlight is a cool blue. Getting a car in the near future, all depends when we move office and where we move to but it's looking like a 2000/2001 VW Polo 1L. |

Little improvement... (Oct 09 2003 23:59 GMT) - From a 37 seconds startup time in normal conditions, I went to 4 seconds in optimal/normal conditions (i.e.: database up to date) or 45 seconds if the database has to be completely regenerated with new data. Only downside: now the application carries around the Sql Server 2000 CE runtime. |

An unlikely new source of writing talent: Blogs (Oct 09 2003 23:59 GMT) - rachel points us to this story at the"Chicago Tribune about how blogs are providing a springboard for talented writers who are bypassing the usual route to a lucrative scribeship. Before you (okay, I) quit your day job, Nick Denton, president of the blog Gawker.com, cautions: "I don't think a blogger is going to transition from having 100 people a day in their audience straight to [a position as a] contributing editor for Vanity Fair, but there's an easier progression than in the past." |

Microsoft developing software to track child porn (Oct 09 2003 23:59 GMT) - Steffers writes "Stemming from an e-mail sent by a Canadian cop, Microsoft Canada is developing an open source software to assist police investigations of child pornography. The article makes me wonder what (if any) applications there would be to track "inappropriate web materials" in libraries? Not being a techie I don't know what to expect/think, what are the thoughts of the tech gurus out there?" |

Out of the penalty box ... (Oct 09 2003 23:58 GMT) - Out of the penalty box I finished Knights of the Old Republic, and since then, when I've had a chance to play games, I've been playing GameBoy (especially the quite tasty Final Fantasy Tactics Advance). But let's face it; it's a little cramped. So the PC, which hadn't even been unpacked after the move, has been let out of the cage. Because games are backpiling, and I can only resist their tender charms for so long. |

Sequins and Spandex: Marketing Lessons from Rock and Roll (Oct 09 2003 23:56 GMT) - The most famous names in rock and roll owe their long-term success to marketing skills as much as to musical talent, according to Roger Blackwell and Tina Stephan, co-authors of Brands That Rock: How to Win Fans and Influence Profits. The authors are struck by the fact that groups like KISS and The Rolling Stones and individual artists like Madonna and Elton John continue to have hit songs and sold-out concerts today, decades after they first became popular. How do they do it, and what, if anything, can we learn from them? Knowledge@Wharton critiques the book[base ']s performance. |

Suing Your Customers: A Winning Business Strategy? (Oct 09 2003 23:55 GMT) - The recording industry has a pricing problem. People do not want to pay $15-20 for a compact disc when they can download the same music for free over the Internet. The industry[base ']s solution appears as novel as the technology that is giving it such headaches: launch hundreds of lawsuits against otherwise law-abiding consumers who download music. As G. |

Kicking Ass has a bead ... (Oct 09 2003 23:55 GMT) - Kicking Ass has a bead on The GOP's real agenda, they say. Want to see the Republican Party's long-term vision for America? Just take a look at the Texas GOP's platform, says Kevin Drum over at Calpundit. As he points out, it's Texas Republicans -- like Tom DeLay, Karl Rove, and George W. Bush -- who are running the Republican Party at a national level, and the Texas Republican platform neatly spells out the long-term goals of these radical extremists who are running the country. |

Daily Show On The Residents Of Alabama's Decision To Decimate Its Government (Oct 09 2003 23:53 GMT) - This is from the September 24, 2003 program. Alabama is facing its worst budget crisis since the great depression. When faced with a modest tax hike or the utter decimation of its state government, Alabama voters voted for the utter decimation of the government. This will result in the closing of 52 driver's examination sites, 2 Field offices, the creation of a 4 day work week for State Troopers, hundreds of employees and prosecutor's offices being laid off, and 5,000 - 6,000 inmates being released early (among other things). As usual, I received all of this detailed information from The... |
