SpamBayes (Oct 09 2003 19:21 GMT) - While I am still stuck in Outlook land, looking for a better PIM, I have decided to remove my current spam-filtering software, Cloudmark, and to give SpamBayes a try. Cloudmark was nice for a while, but suffered from being slow and having a fairly high false-positive rate. Now that they're... |

Predicting Wildfire Behavior by Just Watching (Oct 09 2003 19:21 GMT) - Yogi Bera would be proud of this. By collecting real-time data about wildfires using airborne and ground-based sensors, Rochester Institute of Technology scientists feed that data into a fire behavior model that outputs a movie depicting the fire behavior over the next hour. Then, they dispatch this information to the laptops of fire managers who can make better field decisions on how best to fight the fire by just watching the "movie". Although there is a four year target to fully demonstrate all aspects of this system, this concept illustrates the power of real-time analysis of real-time information. In essence, by collecting information from “out-there” (physical world), and combining it with information “down-here” (computer databases and models), we can deduct new-found knowledge, not possible before. |

The Grand UK Weblog Xmas Party Shoutout (Oct 09 2003 19:20 GMT) - Ok, I know Christmas is miles away, but forgive me - organisation of these things takes time. If you're residing in the UK, and you keep a weblog, and you want to go out on a Christmas razz with other UK webloggers sometime in the next few months, then let us know. We're trying to arrange a big UK Weblog Community Christmas Party and we want you to be there. It'll be in London, which I know is annoying for many, but I'm sure with a little organisation we can put out-of-town bloggers up with in-town bloggers for the night. Hey, we're a community of likeminds, right? |

Invadaz (Oct 09 2003 19:20 GMT) - Formal appologies to the head of Funjunkie, Mr Wild for not getting him a FJ t-shirt that fits. There's always a lesson to be learned, and in the instance, it's 'don't leave subordinates in charge of merchandise'. In an attempt at atonement, I offer Mr Wild an early Friday game, in the vain attempt of making him think it's the weekend so he'll suddenly get excited about buying his leather coat and temporarily forgetting about his t-shirt. Which I just mentioned again. Damn. |

Weekend Ahoy! (Oct 09 2003 19:20 GMT) - As you can see by the crude way that I've hijacked the sacred FJ logo, it's time for another Magic Roundabout. For those of you who aren't in the know, it's a super dooper FJ endorsed club night held at the Roadmender in Northampton. If that doesn't take your fancy, then this Sunday hosts the 2003 World Conker Championships. And to top off the weekend (at the start), there's also some football thing happening too. Something for everybody. |
