Requirements (Oct 09 2003 21:59 GMT) - I'm boning up on requirements processes and use cases for a new project. Funny - I used to hate the requirements phase. I was too impatient; I wanted to jump quickly to design and development. These days, I actually enjoy it. |

New Haven: Safe Haven for Noise Terrorists (Oct 09 2003 21:59 GMT) - New Haven, Connecticut has won this month's "Noisy Dozen" award from Noise Free America for allowing its citizens to be assaulted by dangerous noise from "boom cars" and loud exhausts on cars and motorcycles. While Mayor John DeStafano promotes New Haven as a "livable," "safe," and "all-American" city, the boom car boys and the loud exhaust crowd thunders away. Indeed, New Haven has become a "safe haven" for violent noisemakers. [PRWEB Oct 9, 2003] |

Parent calls for removal of quot;Of Mice and Menquot; and other Titles (Oct 09 2003 21:59 GMT) - The Pantagraph reports that two complaints have been lodged against John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men," assigned to a sophomore English class in Normal, IL. Connie Tripp, parent of a student at Normal Community High School, has called for the removal of the book on the grounds that it "contains racial slurs, profanity and violence." Her daughter, a Black student, said that she felt degraded by the book and spent several weeks in the library while the class discussed the book. The family rejected the school's alternative offering, "The Pearl," also by Steinbeck. |

heteronormativity (Oct 09 2003 21:58 GMT) - I so shouldn't wear one of these shirts to the office. They're technically, but not politically, work-safe, as about 6 coworkers in an office of 70 or so have tied the noose^H^H^H^H^Hknot within the last year. HR sends around "congratulations" cards for everyone in the office to sign when one of these Momentous Occasions happens. Silly straight people; but an entire corkboard of "hang your wedding pics here" has gone up in the office kitchen. |

Footsteps (Oct 09 2003 21:57 GMT) - Los Angeles: Oddly paced thriller with big credibility holes deals a tense, claustrophobic hand but can't get past a silly plotline that never once seems believable. Taut and edgy in some moments, but purely outrageous when it counts most., telepic is more of an exercise in behavior than in narrative since it takes place, for the most part, in one house. |

Intuit and the lost art of personal finance programs (Oct 09 2003 21:57 GMT) - Ted Leung relates his frustration with Intuit. Intuit lost me long before the DRM thing, by acting like a bunch of used car salesmen. These days, you install Quicken and get 10 icons on your desktop and spend weeks turning off the screens asking if you want to give more money to Intuit. I recently found a Python based checkbook program, as well as CBB, written in Perl. My demands aren't much more than something that will let me balance my checkbook and keep track of my mortgage, and maybe enable tracking transfers between accounts (a big maybe, I think I could live without). |
