Merit Over Seniority (Oct 10 2003 02:59 GMT) - Australia seems to be reaching the conclusion that merit should trump senioritywhen deciding pay levels for employees: Top teachers and those who undertook extracurricular activities with students should be paid more to increase the profession's prestige so teaching was not "a fallback option". "Progressively, teaching career and salary advancement should come to be based on merit and teaching performance rather than length of service, with accomplished teachers... |

Fear (Oct 10 2003 02:59 GMT) - Along with the recall came cries, mainly from liberals such as Pelosi, that politicians shouldn't have to look over their shoulder for fear of being recalled. Well, that is exactly what they should be considering when they cast their votes and enact legislation that goes against the majority. Robert Novak reminds us that: The instruments of direct citizen participation devised early in the 20th century by such progressives as California's Hiram Johnson always have been hated by... |

Cheer for Bush (Oct 10 2003 02:59 GMT) - The Union Leader has some words for those who may actually want the best for our country: When the President of the United States comes to New Hampshire today, please give him a cheer. Politics aside (we know that seems a naive concept these days), George W. Bush is President at one of the most dangerous times in American history. It is in America’s interest to show him our support . |

Sneaker Salvation (Oct 10 2003 02:57 GMT) - If you will please recall, the other day I mentioned that my sneakers smell so bad, that they stink like bad omelettes [1]. I could smell them even when I was wearing them and my feet are a good 5' 7" away from my nose. I love these particular sneakers and since they are suede, I can not throw them in the washing machine to purge them of the putrid stank that emanates from them. I am certainly NOT throwing them away... Well, I have found a cure! |

Selective Intelligence on Road to Baghdad (Oct 10 2003 02:56 GMT) - PBS's "Frontline" examines the Bush administration's rationale for the Iraq war in a tone of puzzled sorrow that enhances the righteous indignation of the reporting. [New York Times: Arts] 'White House deception is the real focus of the program, which draws two main conclusions, both linked to hubris: that the administration twisted the facts to paint Mr. Hussein as an imminent threat to the security of the United States, and that it ignored its own experts' warnings about the risks and cost of postwar reconstruction. |

The dying Tivo (Oct 10 2003 02:52 GMT) - The Tivo has been acting up for the last few weeks. When watching recorded shows, sometimes it hangs for a few seconds, then races to catch up with where it should be in time; that's kind of amusing sometimes -- it's a riot to watch Rachael Ray, who's already pretty hyperkinetic in fast motion. But it's not amusing when your watching something you're more focused on. And for the past several days, the Tivo has been first hanging when watching something recorde, and also resetting itself. |
