Webcamming (Oct 10 2003 11:58 GMT) - I set up my old Dell laptop today so Ana and I can use it to teleconference. Or maybe a better word is "webcam chat"? I bought another inexpensive webcam and installed it and then tested to make sure there were no problems. (No reason to invite long-distance debugging sessions because I assumed things were working). It's not going to be iChat A/V, but it'll work okay. |

Student sued over CD piracy study [Stuart Oliver] (Oct 10 2003 11:58 GMT) - I've just read this article reporting that a student is being sued for publicly publishing how to circumvent a CD anit-piracy device. As I am always interested in these type of achievements, particularly in the environment of limited funds and resources, I read on with interest. Cue the high-tech software: So, SunnComm have developed, what is essentially, an application that self-installs through the autorun feature that many have enabled on their PC's. This then prevents the copying of protected CD's. |

Nokia exploding batteries revisited (Oct 10 2003 11:57 GMT) - Richard Gayle writes: "Don't they realize that it does not matter what the real cause is? I won't buy a Nokia phone because the battery could explode and there is no reason to know why. To claim that it will not happen if I only use their baterries without a good explanantion why does not make me comfortable. They should step up and say we will do everything we can to answer the problem instead of hiding behind legalese. |

Five Items (10/10/03). (Oct 10 2003 11:56 GMT) - 1. "Iraq: the lies go on". Here is an interesting opinion piece on how brazenly the media has purposefully misreported the contents of Dr. David Kay's report on the WMD programs his team of experts has found in Iraq after three months. |

When architects have too much Irn Bru (Oct 10 2003 11:56 GMT) - Construction of the Scottish Parliament in Pictures. The site was way over its budget even before they'd started building it, but it's nice to see they're at least doing something creative with the design. Being a lucky soul, I get to walk past this !!!!!monstrosity every single day. |

Politics Isn't Funny (Oct 10 2003 11:56 GMT) - Here's an unintentionally hilarious Washington Post article gravely discussing the implications of Jay Leno emceeing Arnold Schwarzenegger's election-night party. "His appearance on campaign night," the Post's Sharon Waxman intoned, "seems to implicitly raise questions about what Leno's responsibilities ought to be -- to his audience, to his network and to his entertainer-friends-politician " Several hand-wringing quotes ensue. The silliest, maybe, comes from Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism. If you want to play Peter Jennings, then you have to play by some of the same rules as Peter Jennings, even if 99 percent of your show is pure entertainment. You cross a line when you start to get into this other game. |
