Mikhail Kalashnikov: I sleep soundly - Guardian (Oct 10 2003 15:59 GMT) - "Shamed by his parents' exile, he was determined to do his bit for the Soviet cause. And so Mikhail Kalashnikov invented what was to become the world's most prolific killing machine....In 1947 the Avtomatni Kalashnikova (Automatic of Kalashnikov) won a Soviet competition to design the ultimate submachine -gun for the victorious Red Army....The key to its success is its simple design, intended to ensure that even the unskilled women and children running the Soviet arms factories during wartime could mass-produce it for their fathers and sons on the front." |

Acer 300 Tablet PC (Oct 10 2003 15:59 GMT) - New tablet out, Acer 300. Few cool features I've noticed, but the first thing that stood out was that the side latches aren't there anymore. Still a little big for my taste, and as Faisal pointed out (among others) the resolution is a bit low for a 14.1” screen, but still a good entry to the market. |

Mugger on amNewYork (Oct 10 2003 15:58 GMT) - "I doubt amNewYork will make much of an impact on a very crowded and competitive marketplace. New Yorkers don't need another dumbed-down daily to read on subways. There's already the New York Post, which I happen to like, for readers with an aversion to 'big' words, and the New York Times, for those who want their political biases reinforced. No Wall Street Journal reader will treat this new paper as anything more than the trash it's bound to be." |

(601)amNewYork (Oct 10 2003 15:58 GMT) - "Yet Another Newspaper" syndrome has struck New York again. A free daily commuter paper, amNewYork, launched this morning adding to the glut of existing dailies. amNY (is that pronounced a-m-n-y or am-n-y or Amny?) targets my generation. The editors provide justification in their first "op-ed": |
