Cingular Wireless: After Merger, Wireless Service Integrates Data Collection and Financial Reporting (Oct 11 2003 04:05 GMT) - When the domestic wireless divisions of BellSouth and SBC merged to become Cingular Wireless, they needed a way to consolidate access to customer and financial data. With each business entity running custom data-gathering systems, the need for a more productive, integrated database solution became one of the new companys most important requirements. Working with OutlookSoft consultants Corporation, Cingular connected its people, information, and systems with a solution based on Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Now the company gathers data into one central data store, integrating it with streamlined analysis and reporting. Data is always current and accessible from anywhere on the Cingular network, giving employees and system administrators more time to focus on business initiatives. |

Can blogs have several parents? (Oct 11 2003 04:02 GMT) - Several people have noted a section in the latest Columbia Journalism review about blogging. Among the interesting bits and pieces was a claim that one online magazine, The Morning News, "is not a blog, insists Rosecrans Baldwin, the News's twenty-six-year-old editor, since it uses different voices." Which gels with one of the general characteristics of weblogs, but what about significant blog exceptions, such as SixApart's weblog and the Volokh Conspiracy? The edges are blurred, and it is difficult to decide what is on one side of the line, what on the other.... |

Horrific Halloween Memories (Oct 11 2003 04:01 GMT) - Anyone like me who was a kid in the 70s has probably got many, many Halloween memories of dressing up in foul-smelling, mass-produced "costumes" that were really just (highly flammable, I'm sure) plastic sacks with the logo of a TV show or movie stamped all over them. It wasn't so much that you looked like Luke Skywalker, but you were wearing an Official Star Wars Plastic Sack with the words "Star Wars" and "Luke Skywalker" on it, along with a cheap plastic mask featuring oddly shaped eye-holes and a stripe of yellow paint across the top to indicate Luke's blond hair, and that was all that mattered. (UPDATE: Don't believe me? Here's a picture of a vintage Yoda "costume" from the company that was the biggest seller of these vinyl monstrosities, Ben Cooper, that oughta show you what I mean. |
