Philosophers discuss open access (Oct 11 2003 15:54 GMT) - Philosophers are discussing high journal prices (low by STM standards) and open access. The discussion seems to have started in late September when Brian Weatherson posted some philosophy journal prices to his blog. Comments to the posting criticized the high price of Synthese ($1,652/year for institutions, $70 for individuals, from Kluwer). This elicited a detailed and undefensive reply from John Symons, the Synthese editor, who has brought down the price during his tenure and considered open access. There are now further thoughts and comments on the Crooked Timber blog. |

Ugly Cars Sell (Oct 11 2003 15:53 GMT) - You've probably noticed that there are more and more ugly cars on the road. Why is that? You can get the answer From the MSNBC article: Why we'll see more ugly cars. Vehicles that make a mark with "extreme" styling - like the Chrysler PT Cruiser and Chevrolet Avalanche - move off the lot faster and generate a significantly higher profit margin than their plain-vanilla brethren, according to a study from J. |

Alton Brown Interview (Oct 11 2003 15:53 GMT) - The best cooking show on TV, by far, is "Good Eats." Here's an interview with the host, Alton Brown. He sez... This is a labor of love on my part and I gambled my entire life on doing this, so I am rather loath to dilute it. My feeling has always been that Good Eats would have never happened had it been left to a committee. |
