Spying on Johnny follow up (Oct 11 2003 20:59 GMT) - Fang-Face writes "There is a very brief note about the Massachusetts Bill at American Libraries Online. It doesn't really offer any new information although it does put an entirely different slant to the story than the earlier article. Quinn decided to sponsor the legislation last year after an irate constituent contacted him. #8220;The local librarian had called the house regarding overdue books for their 8- or 9-year-old child,#8221; |

Is Google a more dangerous monopoly than Microsoft? (Oct 11 2003 20:58 GMT) - As a monopoly Microsoft controls the tools and platform the majority of people use to access the internet. While this has significance in terms of how the browser and the desktop evolves it is not nearly significant as the control of how we discover information. This thought was sparked by the article Google CEO speaks out on future of search where Eric Schmidt talks about the need for personalization in search. and Google's acquisition of Kaltix a personalization technology for search. Google is becoming the gatekeeper of information for the new millennium. |

Paid Advertising and Focus of a Blog (Oct 11 2003 20:57 GMT) - Nano Publishing News In current practice, blogs are being used for more than simple personal journals. Matt Haughey points out that AdSense Advertising is best used by non-typical blogs. Typical blogs have been those that are centered around the musings of an author saying whatever she or he feels is important for the day with pointers to sites around the web - a kind of daily directory of a web-reader based upon his/her personal take on what is new and cool on the web. Matt says advertising such as AdSense only kicks in with a more highly focussed blog, a specific subject blog. Eric Snowdeal further questions whether the answer to Microdoc News getting a lower amount than Matt in operating a blog is the focus of Microdoc News. |

Two at the same time (Oct 11 2003 20:53 GMT) - When I turned my mac on yesterday it made an ominous clunk sound, like it was trying to eject a cd. I hit the cd eject button but nothing happened, it's a slot loader so I couldn't see inside. Once I'd logged on there was no CD on the desktop but I was sure I could see one inside. This was ominous, Edward has taken to putting CD's in the mac, the other day I found the greatest guitar solos of all time in there. So I powered down my mac and "extracted the core", that's the coolest part about the cube, taking it to pieces is so sci-fi. |

Rigged Election Day In Chechnya (Oct 11 2003 20:53 GMT) - BBC News: Chechnya's 'free and fair' poll "Last Sunday's presidential election in Chechnya was won by pro-Moscow leader Akhmad Kadyrov. The vote is part of Moscow's plans to stabilise the troubled republic, but human rights groups dismissed it as a farce and international bodies raised questions over its legitimacy. [...] The road we were travelling on had come under regular attack so a military jeep drove out in front, jamming the frequencies used in radio-controlled mines. |
