- Today's Yankees - Red Sox matchup in Game 3 of the American League Championship series got ugly in the 4th inning, after Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez hit Yankee batter Karim Garcia with a pitch. Words were exchanged and things escalated in the bottom of that inning when Manny Ramirez of Boston charged the mound after a pitch from Roger Clemens that Ramirez deemed to be retaliatory, even though the pitch was merely high and a bit inside. The benches cleared, and 72 year-old Yankee coach Don Zimmer was thrown to the ground by Martinez after charging him. There's a type of culture that exists in baseball that involves, sad to say, the use of the baseball as a weapon. Throwing a ball at a batter, or very close to him, is often construed as sending a message, for which retaliation become almost inevitable. |
