Pump up the volume: the new pirate radio (Oct 12 2003 04:33 GMT) - When I was in university I had a weekly radio show held in the wee hours of the night on the university station CKMS. The show was called Make it a Double, and the schtick was that every song had some kind of link to the song immediately following it. Whenever someone tuned in they could get an associated pair within two songs. I used to snicker when one of the pre-recorded station identification bites characterized the station as 'pirate radio.' There was little of the pirate spirit about it, really. |

I like that Mary Hodder uses the word (Oct 12 2003 04:33 GMT) - "fucking" about 20 times in her post Lawmeme Post Title Altered in Ironic Situation discussing some people being offended about Ernie Miller of LawMeme using "fucking" in the title of his post A Fucking Interesting Decision From the FCC discussing Bono's use of the word "fucking" in his acceptance speech. I received a similar reaction to a recent blog post where I quoted someone saying "fuck the telemarketers."Related: How many times is the word "fuck" used in Pulp Fiction - a film record since beaten by South Park's 399? Easy as Spam (Oct 12 2003 04:24 GMT) - Who in the hell opens messages that look like this? This is a screenshot of the subject column of my spam folder. If people didn't open spam - and worse yet - buy products advertised in spam - I wouldn't need a spam folder. That having been said, I may not need a spam folder for long. SpamSieve's accuracy continues to climb - it's up to 99. |

Wally George is Dead (Oct 12 2003 04:24 GMT) - Wally George, the vanilla-helmet-haired right-wing confrontation TV-show host from Orange County, died over the weekend. He was bankrupt and none of the "at least" four wives he had during his life was living with him when he died at 71. He was Rebecca De Mornay's father, which caused him to get lots of crank-calls about how could he be so against libertine sex and stuff like that when his daughter schtupped Tom Cruise on a train in "Risky Business" and played a prostitute in the movie. But more importantly, my teenaged liberal friends hated him so much during his peak popularity in the mid 1980s that we absolutely had to watch him every single day after school. A neat trick of free speech, that. |

i was trying to decide ... (Oct 12 2003 04:20 GMT) - i was trying to decide recently what my most prized possession was, and came up with a surprising answer: my library. i read a lot - probably 2-3 books per week - and have been for at least the last 20 years. i'm picky about the books that i purchase, and as a result, have a really awesome library of the cream of the crop in a good variety of topics, from sci-fi to biographies to mysteries. the main problem is that i don't have space for them all, so they're arranged in stupid stacks that are hard to access. |
