Linux: Laptop Mode Merged Into Stable Kernel (Oct 12 2003 07:59 GMT) - The recent 2.4.23-pre6 kernel [story] included Jens Axboe's "laptop mode" patch [story]. This patch can increase battery lifetime on laptops by intelligently batching reads and writes to and from disk. This prolongs battery life by minimizing how often a laptop's drive has to spin up. |

NetBSD: New Core Team (Oct 12 2003 07:59 GMT) - The NetBSD project has a new core team, welcoming Allen Briggs, Frank van der Linden, Luke Mewburn, Matt Thomas and Christos Zoulas. Alistair Crooks explains on behalf of the Board of Directors: "Four years ago, the present core team was set up to be the technical management of the project. This was always intended as a temporary measure, and we'd like to thank the members of the core team who have spent a lot of time and effort looking after the direction of the NetBSD project, and steering it to where it is today. In particular, we'd like to thank Itojun for his enthusiasm and energy - the commit logs show that he is currently one of the most active developers that the NetBSD project has. |

KernelTrap: Updating Theme (Oct 12 2003 07:59 GMT) - I'm in the process of updating the KernelTrap theme. So far the biggest difference is that the actual layout/presentation is now fully handled by CSS [blog]. Beyond that, I'm hoping to have time tomorrow to update the overall structure (explained below). Please let me know if the new theme is intolerable on your browser. I've only tested with a couple of Linux browsers, and it seems fine there. |

Bob Martin on Agile methods (Oct 12 2003 07:55 GMT) - One thing that I've appreciated about Bob Martin's writing is that he is able to get around the type surrounding a topic and dig out the essence. He did this so well by pointing out the dependency inversion properties of objects. He's got a new post about Agile methods, so we'll see if his insight proves out to be true this time as well... |

pycs.net, still broken (Oct 12 2003 07:55 GMT) - Argh - just logged in to the server to find that the pycs.net process has used 1338 minutes (just over 22 hours) of CPU time since Friday, and that it was currently sucking 97% CPU. Ouch. Sorry to all the other users of the JohnCompanies FreeBSD box it's been abusing. It looks like something is causing MetaKit (the database) to spin while trying to access something. |
