Don't use Google exclusively, but don't count it out, either. (Oct 14 2003 13:59 GMT) - David Dillard invites us to read his lengthy post on NetGold about how search engines, while not the end-all of research, do have their place in scholarly information retrieval. Specifically, he was looking for references to the term "Tourismification" in order to respond to a discussion thread in a sociology forum. He had no luck with the social science databases he normally turns to, but Google found him paydirt: Notice the Google search picked up in the first ten records sampled mostly scholarly work.... Peer reviewed literature may be much more palitable [sic] to the academic scholar in terms of its academic ethnic heritage, and the World Wide Web may be viewed as having been raised on the bad side of town. |

Judith Tapiero And The Organized Library (Oct 14 2003 13:59 GMT) - 1099.com has a Nice Feature On Judith Tapiero. Tapiero, whose business is called The Organized Library, has made a living by bringing order to corporations' chaos. Armed with a master's degree in library science, a no-nonsense manner, a natural bent for organizing, and raves from corporate clients, Tapiero cleans up the paper trails others leave behind. She tackles teetering stacks of Internet print-outs, annual reports, and client information, piles of journals, and pyramids of books -- many of them in triplicate -- and picks out the information gems upon which each organization's very life depends. |

Louise Rachael Levy Schaper : Modern librarian (Oct 14 2003 13:59 GMT) - North West Arkansas News has a nice profile of Louise Schaper, the "petite, spunky director of the Fayetteville Public Library." Though she started her career creating virtual libraries, Schaper now says public libraries are "symbolic of our free society." "We believe that we need to have the best works, not just the best sellers," she says. "In a university town, one of the major attractions for people is generally a public library that is better than a public library in a noncollege town — because people are education focused and they do take reading and they take knowledge of authors and their works very seriously." |

Good school libraries boost readers (Oct 14 2003 13:59 GMT) - Bob Cox spotted an Obvious Article from down in Florida, where they say Donna Baumbach, a professor at the University of Central Florida, analyzed more than 1,700 media centers at Florida schools. She found that well-staffed, well-stocked libraries drive up elementary reading scores by 9 percent, middle-school scores by 3 percent and high-school scores by 22 percent. Her yearlong study reflects the findings of similar research in six other states. Of course, Money for new books is sporadic at best. Librarians report that about half of their budgets come not from the state but from book fairs, parent organizations, candy sales and profits from school supplies, according to the latest research. |

If you could just do that... that would be great. (Oct 14 2003 13:57 GMT) - Someone working on Mail.app should completely disable the popup dialogs which interrupt whatever I'm doing every time a mail server is unreachable. The app already disables the mailbox widgets, so why the bouncing icon and the modal dialog? Laptops go on and off the net constantly. Please stop alerting me to an event which is in no way alarming. |
