Using Primary Sources on the Web (Oct 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - Using Primary Sources on the Web is a nice little site put together by by the Instruction Research Services Committee of the Reference and User Service Association History Section in the American Library Association. "Students and researchers now have greater access to primary source materials for historical research than ever before. The traditional use of sources available in print and microfilm continues to be the foundation for research, but in some cases documents, letters, maps, photographs of ancient artifacts and other primary material are available online in different formats from free websites or subscription services on the internet. Users of primary sources have always needed to examine their sources critically, but now with the proliferation of electronic resources from a wide variety of web site producers, evaluation is more important than ever before. Users of web resources must now consider the authenticity of documents, what person or organization is the internet provider, and whether the electronic version serves their needs. |

Oxford college cellar unearths rare views of Canada (Oct 14 2003 15:59 GMT) - Charles Davis writes "from The Guardian: A filthy bundle of papers, which had been lying in a corner of the cellars of Balliol College in Oxford for at least a century, has turned out to contain rare landscapes of 18th century Canada, including the oldest known views of the green hills and scattered houses around what are now the cities of Montreal and Quebec. The paintings, by a British army officer who was also a talented amateur artist, include scenes of Niagara Falls before it became one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world." |

The Stone Of The Tree (Folklore by moss) (Oct 14 2003 15:58 GMT) - A story is told (taken from M.Dames - Ireland, Sacred Journey) from 1879 that Lough Gur used to disappear by magic every 7 years, and that a supernatural tree would appear, growing from the bottom of the lough. The whole area is part of a larger story that relates to the goddess Aine who is represented by a hill called Cnoc Aine which is very near to Lough Gur. Dames goes on to say that this tree could be Aine's treetrunk father Eogabal, and into this story he winds the story of the World Tree... the ... |
