a tiny step forward (Oct 14 2003 17:24 GMT) - Saudi Arabia to hold municipal elections Saudi reformists on Tuesday hailed as a major step a government decision to hold elections for the first time in the absolute monarchy but hoped it would not be a one-off move to appease growing calls for reform. Saudi analysts said plans for municipal polls were a signal the government was serious about expanding popular participation in the kingdom which has come under pressure from inside and in the West to grant more freedoms and quash militancy. "What is taking place in Saudi Arabia is a very radical reassessment of the social contract," the English-language Arab News daily said in an editorial. Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in the capital Riyadh on Tuesday in a rare show of public opposition, demanding reforms, during the kingdom's first human rights conference. Abdul Rahman al-Sueilam, head of the Saudi Red Crescent Society, said the government was trying to reach out to citizens by introducing local elections. |

Thanks to things like the DMCA it's still illegal to offer copies of software that is completely obsolete and out of use. |

So now we know how... (Oct 14 2003 17:22 GMT) - Let's face it, our cats are fat. Since Heidegger moved into our apartment, Zelda has been growing larger and larger; Heidegger's been trying to keep up with the weight gain, but his multiple episodes of sickness/wounds have helped curb the weight gain. A few months ago, we cut down the amount of food we give them on a daily basis, in the hopes that they wouldn't gain weight quite as quickly. Of course, they continued to be the lovable porkers we were getting used to. |

I keep getting this question: "why does Microsoft let you weblog?" Ed Cone asked me that yesterday for a column he's writing for Baseline magazine. You know, I don't think it's that weird. |
