Jose, Can You See? (Oct 14 2003 17:40 GMT) - Reader James Blakey sends in a fascinating story about Jose Feliciano and the 1968 World Series. Up until now, I had thought the sentiment expressed in Fargo"With Jose Feliciano you got no complaints"was beyond dispute. Not so at Game 5 of the Tigers/Cardinals matchup, where the sightless crooner introduced America to the concept of a "non-traditional" rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner. |

enron's email diaries (Oct 14 2003 17:39 GMT) - Wow. A Salon article with excerpts from the Enron emails released last week as part of the publication of material related to the investigation of its collapse:[...] the Enron e-mail library posted on FERC's Web site [...] contains a remarkable glimpse into the culture of Enron -- how the family of Ken Lay lived large in the glory days, how Tom DeLay and other members of Congress used the company as a veritable ATM for campaign contributions, how Enron plotted to place employees in the Bush-Cheney administration, how company executives almost obsessively followed the investigation into price gouging during California's energy crisis, and ultimately how Enron employees suffered when the company collapsed. |

A Good Weekend (Oct 14 2003 17:39 GMT) - It was a good weekend. Another year passed ("You're older than you've ever been/And now you're even older/And now you're even older/And now you're even older...", TMBG), but it was a good passing, just the same. Although I would rather have been in Wales, I think the weekend was good fun. Ed surprised me with an excellent birthday gift: |

However, where the Americans are learning, Europeans are picking up stupid habits. Two observations in the wild just today: The Guardian calls the controversy over British Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith receiving taxpayer money for his wife's secretarial work "betsygate" on the online frontpage. Dutch Prince Johan Friso, second in line to the throne, has renounced the throne to marry the woman he loves, Mabel Wisse Smit, after scandals have emerged about her past affairs. |
