Open Networks at Australian Tennis Open (Oct 14 2003 18:35 GMT) - Tennis Australia have deployed a totally open WiFi network at the Melbourne Tennis Centre for the media to transmit their stories during the Australian Open tournament in January and the Davis Cup Final next month. The network can be accessed from the car park or out on the street with a directional antenna. The SSID is AOADMIN and there is no encryption or authentication required. I have been informed that they are intending to fire this network up on Tuesday October 14 at 2:30pm for a test with the media. |

Does She Get to Ride the 6 For Free Too? (Oct 14 2003 18:34 GMT) - The endlessly self-inventive Jennifer Lopez is trying out a new role: critic of public choice theory. According to Rush and Molloy, the modern Liz to Ben Affleck's Dick requested free use of on-duty Miami police officers for security during a recent visit. "Lopez's people said since they paid a lot in taxes," says Miami Beach Police spokesman Detective Bobby Hernandez, "we should give them officers." Put aside for a moment whatever objections you may have to the overexposed chanteuse. |

What Price Freedom Communications? (Oct 14 2003 18:33 GMT) - Freedom Communications, the publisher of the Orange County Register and other papers, and one of the few remaining family-owned media companies, has worked out a deal so that it will stay within the family. As this Ft. Worth Star-Telegram account reports, terms were not disclosed, but most analysts figure the company is worth between $1.5 billion and $2 billion. With family control, it's likely that Freedom papers will maintain their distinctively libertarian slant. |
