Tuesday. Tuesday night is my ... (Oct 14 2003 20:59 GMT) - Tuesday. Tuesday night is my sitcom class at UCLA. It's interesting for me, because I'm being forced to be social. In fact, forced to be way social. The class is run roundtable style, and everyone jumps in at any time to rip you apart. |

The soundtrack to your coming of age (Oct 14 2003 20:59 GMT) - Mac at Tacitus asks the musical question At that point in your life when you hit the brink of adulthood (college graduation, dropping out, joining the navy, being kidnapped by cult of left-handed redheads, whatever it might be) what was the single most defining album/CD that the largest number of people you knew were likely to own? Here's what I posted off the cuff: Coming of age is hard to define, no? The biggest single album of my college years may have been Purple Rain, with "When Doves Cry" as the song noted most likely to be cranked out of dorm windows into the quad in the spring of my junior I think year (of college). But first-job era? |

Kids and Porn: Court Tries Again (Oct 14 2003 20:59 GMT) - Wired Is Reporting The Supreme Court agreed Tuesday to revisit the thorny question of how to protect children from online smut without resorting to unconstitutional censorship. The case asks whether, in the name of children, the law restricts too much material that adults have the right to see or buy. On a more practical level, the court will decide whether the government can require some form of adults-only screening system to ensure children cannot see material deemed harmful to them. |

Spam in blogs, een nieuw probleem? (Oct 14 2003 20:58 GMT) - Ik las onderweg al een pointer op mijn PDA-webloglezertje over een nieuw, snelgroeiend fenomeen: commentspam. Liz Lynn @ 10/14/2003 04:35 PM (Oct 14 2003 20:58 GMT) - Ok, I'll grant that artificial limbs operated by Brain Power make a certain amount of sense for those who nearly died in a rocket accident, and for paraplegics everywhere. (Although to be strict about it, Jordi wasn't wearing a robot on his face, just an interpretive device, and I believe that a two-handed Captain Hook would have found some other reason for channeling his rage at being picked on by childhood bullies.) However, I can only assume that those of you who are... |

Cuba sera pronta libre (Oct 14 2003 20:57 GMT) - The title to this post is a quote from President Bush's recent proclamation calling for a free Cuba. Boudicca's Last Battle (Oct 14 2003 20:55 GMT) - "Suetonius chose a position in a defile, with a wood behind him," explains military historian Martin Marix Evans. "There could be no enemy, he knew, except at his front, where there was open country without cover for ambushes."With archaeological estimates for a British population now at upwards of five million in Boudica's time - a figure not reached again until the 17th century - it is possible she had well over 100,000, not an army but a whole people bent on revenge."Grandparents, children, carts, cows," said Marix Evans. He estimates that Suetonius had something like 10,000, all regular soldiers. |
