Linux: Conserving Power With Variable Scheduling Timeouts (Oct 15 2003 23:59 GMT) - George Anzinger announced the first release of the Variable Scheduling Timeouts (VST) package. VST aims to decrease power consumption on an idle computer through "tick elimination". George explains that VST adds logic to the idle task, scanning the timer list and skipping timer interrupts when there is no timer near. He says, "The net result is that a [quiet] system will use far less power as it does not need to wake up [every] 1/HZ timer tick." When asked if statistics were available showing how much power the VST patch actually saves, George replied that this was still an early version of the code, and that by making it available he was hoping others would try it and share their results. |

FreeBSD: GEOM Gate "Ready For Testing" (Oct 15 2003 23:59 GMT) - Pawel Jakub Dawidek announced that GEOM Gate [story] is ready for testing, though internal documentation still notes, "This is highly experimental software and isn't finished yet. Keep that in mind." GEOM Gate is built upon the GEOM 'stackable BIO subsystem' [story], and allows for the remote mounting of disk devices across a network. From the documentation: "For example you have two machines: |

Matt Langer wants to advertise in the NY Times (Oct 15 2003 23:56 GMT) - Matt Langer has an idea that might be crazy enough to work: get a bunch of A-list bloggers to work together to raise $156,000 to put a full-page ad in the Sunday NY Times. The goal? Highlight the ability of weblogs to bring undiluted news and commentary to the masses, and shine a spotlight on the failure of the mass media to do the same. You never know… |

More on the EJP Book 2nd Edition (Oct 15 2003 23:55 GMT) - While I'm waiting for the page proofs of Chapter 33 to print out I thought I'd add a bit more information on EJP with IBM WebSphere 2nd Edition. Our new book, (which is drawn from the 1st edition) improves upon it by updating the versions of WAS and WSAD covered to WAS 5.02 and WSAD 5.1, now covers Struts, XML/XSLT, Web Services and J2EE Security (four entirely new topics) and vastly expands the coverage of patterns and best practices for J2EE, including an in-depth discussion of O/R techniques without Entity beans. We tried to address all of the major reader comments from the first edition, while not losing the cohesiveness that the first edition had. |

SpamSieve - Change the Subject! (Oct 15 2003 23:55 GMT) - I use SpamSieve with Entourage and it works beautifully. Sometimes, though, a false positive occurs: email that isn't spam is marked as spam. I routinely check my spam folder to see if any messages have slipped through, but with over 200 spams per day, this is tedious at best. I've emailed Michael the idea, but here it is again: |
